Default Do Strawberries Smell When Cooking? Reed=No. Sherwood=Yes.

This was another on-set argument between Robert Reed and Sherwood Schwartz. They were rehearsing the episode, "Jan, the Only Child" where Jan complains about having no privacy, and the rest of the kids soon give her the silent treatment.

In this episode Alice and Carol are making Strawberry Preserves for the Charity Square Dance Hoedown. Mike was supposed to come in and say, "It smells like Strawberry Heaven." It didn't work out that way.

The cast and crew are ready to shoot, and everyone is there except Robert Reed who is off sulking in his dressing room. Sherwood goes to see him and Robert gets all arrogant like Sherwood doesn't know that what they are doing on stage. Angrily, he looks at the script and says, "How can I say it smells like strawberry heaven?"

Sherwood replied, "Well, Bob, I just put that there to have you say something else instead of like "Hi honey, I'm home."

Reed said "Well, you don't know do you! For your information, strawberries, when they are cooking, have no odor!" How can I say "it smells like strawberry heaven?"

Sherwood said, "Bob, what are you talking about? I can smell strawberries all over the set!"

Robert said, "Do you want me to believe you or The Encyclopedia Britannica?" (Reed's favorite quoted reference that he used to look up "facts" when he and Sherwood had a script or scene fight.)

Reed wouldn't come down to the set to shoot the scene until the line was changed! He ended up saying. "Hi honey. I do believe I've died and gone to strawberry heaven!"

Who's right in this debate?

could you imagine if Robert Reed had been on the cast of Gilligan's Island?

they would never have gotten a single episode filmed

That's what I thought as well!

Sorry Robert Reed, you and/or the Encyclopedia Britannica are wrong in this case!

LOL!!!! Truer words were never spoken! For the record Tina Louise also was not thrilled about being on Gilligan's Island. She was arrogant on set, because she thought the show was going to be about HER. Sherwood would say's, "Well, it's not "Ginger's Island," it's Gilligan's Island! hahaha!

Tina Louise personality on Gilligan's Island was similar to Robert Reed's on The Brady Bunch. The things Robert did like on Brady Bunch:

1.) Working with the kids. He called this "The best thing in it."

2.) Going on locations "was fun."

It's just that anything that wasn't grounded in facts or logic upset him, and his hatred of all slapstick comedy. I don't think Robert cared for ANY kind of comedy. Florence would at times say to him during the series, "Bob, we're not doing Shakespeare here."

I wonder if Sherwood Schwartz ever had nightmares about coming to the Brady Bunch set and finding out that the parents were played by Robert Reed and Tina Louise.

Wheter or not Robert Reed was right or wrong he seemed to be a disrespectful dirtbag to work with! True he seemed to get along with the actors but totally disrespected the man he worked for. I would have NEVER have put up with him as long as Sherwood did. I would have killed Mr. Brady off!
