Recently because of the magic of the internet have watched episodes of Sanford and Son. I am 47 years old now and have watched this program literally from childhood.
I still laughed out loud at most of the episodes. Just hilarious. Redd Foxx was such a talent and he was so good in this role. Damn, the dialogue was just insanely funny. It still holds up after 40 years. My local NBC affiliate would show Pink Panther cartoons, Sanford and Son and then local wrestling late Saturday morning. Best two hours of television to me! It is politically incorrect now. Several times the so called n-word was used to absolute hilariousness. One example was when Big Money Grip visited Fred and said Lamont was his son. Esther came over, and he repeated the story....and those who know the episode know what Esther called Grip. The. It was found out that Grip made love to Esther instead of Elizabeth with Fred heaping scorn on Grip. " I felt mad at you, but now I feel sorry for you because you do not know between a woman and a crocodile!" Or when Fred went to court to defend Lamont over a ticket and was quizzing the officer on why there were so many blacks on court using the n word. One funny character was the mortician who guest starred at least twice. He was funny and had funny lines. He was also very likable. Grady was great too. One thing, Whitman mayo who played Grady was only in his early 40s when S&S was on. Fred meets Lena Horne....Lena was actually 5 years older than Redd Foxx. Agree with Free, what a fine looking woman. Fred clutching a dress of Lena's, "Lena's body was in this dress......" Fred was smart and wise too. One episode was the card sharks. Another one was the sheisters selling copper he stole. Then the epic Fred and Esther fights. That dialogue was incredible. One of the funniest shows on television that everyone watched. |

Yeah, those were all good episodes. The card sharks episode shows the craftiness of the Fred Sanford character that often goes unmentioned. Funny in that episode he bailed Lamont's sorry ass out at being cheated, and in a later episode in "The Stung" Lamont had the gall to tell Fred he couldn't play cards with the fellas because he wasn't good enough to play! Some nerve! |

Figured I'd bump this rather than starting a new thread. I had seen a few S&S episodes over the years, but never really got that into it. The "Lamont Goes African" episode always stuck in my memory for some reason, but that's about it. Well, I've recently been watching the first four seasons on DVD (my brother is a big fan) and I'm really enjoying it this time around. Usually laugh a couple times per episode while being in awe of the tremendous 70s fashions. Call me crazy, but I actually think I like the Fred-less Grady episodes most of all.
