In the episode, Love in the Ghetto, Florida was saying that James had a pretty good job by time Thelma was born?
What job was that with a 6th grade education? |

And if he had a pretty job they would not be in the projects because they would not qualify |

I think she just meant by a pretty good job by a young family's standards, not by their standards when the family consisted of teenagers. Back when Thelma was born, presumably the late 50s, he was probably pumping gas but on a regular basis.

James did manual labor, which is a field that even those with little education can sometimes find good jobs in. And as for them being in the projects, the back story was that they lived in a cold water flat before moving into the project.
