I have heard this as well. And being a fan of MacGyver since it first aired in 1985, I'd love to see a good movie version of MacGyver. However, if Richard Dean Anderson is not back in it as Mac, I'd rather they not do it at all.
Too many times I have been so disappointed with movie versions of TV shows. There have been so many horrible movie versions of TV shows out there, it's easier to name the few that I think were good adaptations than to name all the bad ones.
In my opinion, the only really good movie versions of TV shows have been:

the Star Trek movies (mainly because they kept the original cast and kept things in continuity with the original show.)

and I generally liked "The Flintstones" and "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas". (But I wish the former didn't have to include that one curse word just to get a PG rating- that is annoying.)

"Inspector Gadget" and "Inspector Gadget 2" are pretty fun too.

And the 2 Scooby-Doo TV-movies are generally pretty good. As a Scooby-Doo fan, I particularly enjoyed the ending sequence from the first movie- nice live action recreation of classic cartoon scenes.
However, the two theatrical movies are horrible.

..........
And there may be some others that are decent that I've forgotten to mention- but I think it's a very small list in general.

Maybe the "Veronica Mars" movie releasing will be true to the show and a good movie version. (I haven't really seen the show though, so I don't care about the show or movie too much, though I like the comparisons between Veronica Mars and Nancy Drew- I do enjoy The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books, so I might like this show if I ever got around to watching it.)

tv shows are some of the hardest movies to adapt if they get it wrong people will say no they'd never said that or done that in the original series.

if they get it right people will say its too far from the original series

Movie versions of TV shows I've enjoyed (I'm only including remakes/reboots, and not movies that are continuations of the shows with original cast like the original Star Trek movies, or The X-Files):

The Fugitive
Star Trek '09
Star Trek Into Darkness
The Addams Family
Addams Family Values
The Flintstones
Speed Racer
21 Jump Street
The A-Team
The Lone Ranger '13
Twilight Zone: The Movie
Tales from the Darkside: The Movie
The Brady Bunch Movie
A Very Brady Sequel

I'd love a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie but ONLY if the original cast/crew is on board.

I really enjoyed The Flintstones. I'm not too fond of movie versions of TV shows but I think this worked because it was a cartoon and you can't really compare actors.

It'd be interesting to see a movie based upon the show "F Troop" and having Jim Parsons play the role that Ken Barry played.

I'm sure you're aware, but there is a Buffy, The Vampire Slayer movie... from 1992. (before the series started- not being a fan of the series, I'm not sure how much the movie and series are related- but I'm pretty sure they're not terribly connected much. lol)
