I could NOT agree more. No woman should ever, ever give a man another chance if he knocks her out with his fists because he is angry. "I'm Sorry", wouldn't begin to cut it.

I must admit, I always had trouble with that scene too. I believe it was the 4 or 5 episode of the first season, and the show was still finding the characters. And this may have been the first episode that featured Amos and/or focused on the James character. So Amos and the writers were probably predisposed to want to show something very dramatic, hence, Amos is throwing chairs around and destroying furniture. Also, I think hypertension was also a bit misunderstood back in the mid-70s. Some medical professionals back then viewed hypertension similarly to we view steroids/roid rage today - sorta like raised blood pressure brings out aggression.
With hindsight being 20/20, I think they should have had Amos have a heart scare or stroke like moment, preceded by the family stress and chaos. The way it was written, and the way Amos played it, it was a little too aggressive and violent I thought, which was particularly not good for the show's image. I think that scene set the tone for Amos as always being a bit on the brink of aggression. But Amos, I think, was aware of that potential issue, and he towed the line pretty good afterwards. I'm sure the last thing he wanted was America's Black 70s father to be a violence-prone maniac who destroyed property and yelled all the time. I like that James was a bit hot tempered after this episode. We always thought he was on the brink of loosing it, but he never did. He just yelled alot. I think Amos and the writers learned their lesson after this episode and walked that line of Black male aggression perfectly. But yes, this episode was the one episode, I thought, they over-played Amos' aggression. I would not have associated aggression as a symptom of hypertension. There is no medical connection between the two. |

Not everyone deals with stress the same. Next time you get highly pissed off, try throwing something, it helps

Bri I am around the same age as Sol and I have high blood pressure. In my case, it runs in my family. Yes, I was loving salt, but it was more heredity. There's no such thing as young people are healthy. Just recently, a schoolmate died of cancer and another schoolmate had a mild heart attack. Both are under 40. |

Seriously Solomon, what kind of question is this? You've never seen grown people throw things to let their frustrations out? It doesn't make them immature, some yes. But for the most part, no. I've thrown things myself when I was frustrated! |
