One thing I think would have been cool: if the Nintendo NES made a video game out of "Growing Pains."
Think about it: Acclaim Entertainment made video games out of such shows as "Airwolf" & "Knight Rider." Why COULDN'T have there been a "Growing Pains" game for the Nintendo NES? I would have made the "Growing Pains" NES game a kiddie version of the "Leisure Suit Larry" computer game by having the Player play the Kirk Cameron character of Mike Seaver attempting to pull one over on his parents like in the actual sitcom via generic episodes; if Mike got Grounded or failed to succeed in pulling one over in ANY way, the Game would be OVER. Do you think a video game of "Growing Pains" would have sold well? |

Much as I love Growing Pains, I can't see how a NES or any other video game version of the sitcom would work well. I think one would be pretty hard pressed to name many sitcoms that have had video games released based on them. The few I can think of offhand would be ALF and Hannah Montana. There is at least some action in the ALF video games, but with Hannah Montana, I believe it's more of a singing game.
The thing is- Airwolf and Knight Rider are both great action/adventure shows from the 1980s (and I love those too, for the record.) And they lend themselves more to the traditional video game format for action. I think it tends to be harder to adapt a sitcom. Not impossible- just a bit harder, in my opinion. Yes, I guess I could maybe see a video game where the player controls Mike Seaver as he pulls pranks and generally just tries to put one over on someone- but I'm not sure how well that would go over with most video gamers. Who would be the villian? Mr. DeWitt? Like I said- it's not impossible; I just don't think it would work very well as a concept. (Of course, if it was available I would probably check it out anyway though. )But I definitely don't want to see any video game similar to Leisure Suit Larry- I don't think that one would be appropriate for Growing Pains at all. |
