Being the devoted mother she was, there's no doubt she would have shared most of it with her starving children.

The Evans kids were not starving! They may have ate a lot of oatmeal, yams, collard greens, etc., but they never went hungry!

It's somewhat surprising in retrospect that Michael or Thelma wouldn't have objected to 'meals' such as these on the grounds of skyrocketing obesity and diabetes among inner city folks - or did these stats not exist in the 1970's?
I seriously doubt that anyone with any kind of nutritional knowledge would have consider that a healthy, well-balanced meal even back then, though.

Pretty much, it was invented in 1967. I suspect it was so popular at the Evan's household because (at the time) it was cheap food.
