I think the drug-courier theory presented in the segment is probably the most likely one. A friend of Chad's reported to Dolly Maurer that he had actually delivered for a Madison-based drug dealer twice over the year before in 1989. There were also individuals that lived very near Chad at the time with strong connections to the south side of Chicago (and had actually moved from Chicago to Madison themselves).
I definitely do not think he committed suicide. I think he was beaten severely, put in that garage, and left to die of carbon monoxide poisoning. I also think the (probably incredibly overworked) police department let the investigation slip through the cracks early on, and that's probably a big reason why no one's been collared for it. That particular section of Chicago Chad Maurer was discovered in had 166 homicides in 1990 alone. |

there are a few other threads on this case, and I don't think there's been any disagreement in regards to what happened to him. Everyone seems to be in agreement it was a drug deal gone bad.
really unfortunate. I wonder if he would have gone into modeling, certainly had the look for it. |
