Sad news to report. Cry of Love singer Kelly Holland has passed away at the age of 52. After battling a serious abdominal infection, Holland died from the condition on Feb. 24.

Cry of Love experienced a great deal of success in the early-to-mid ’90s, hitting the No. 1 spot on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart with ‘Peace Pipe’ in 1993. The band’s previous single, ‘Bad Thing,’ was also a bonafide hit, reaching the No. 2 spot on the Mainstream Rock chart. Both tracks appear on Cry of Love’s debut album, ‘Brother.’

Shortly after the success of ‘Brother,’ Kelly Holland was reportedly fired from the group in 1994. After parting ways with Holland, Cry of Love released one more album, ‘Diamonds & Debris’ in 1997.

“A buddy went to see Kelly at the hospital a few days ago and it was obvious he was not feeling too good,” said Backsliders drummer Jeff Dennis, one of Holland’s old bandmates. “But then these girls came into his room, and he just lit up and started telling jokes. Comedy was his way of bringing people into his universe.”

Cry of Love drummer Jason Patterson shared, “Kelly was the greatest rock and roll singer I’ve ever known, but the boy had some demons, too. There were a lot of things he just could not get past, and they ate him up from the inside out.” [via News Observer]
