My absolute favorite 80s sitcom is MAMA'S FAMILY but I do have several more top picks. The 80s were awesome!

Not sitcoms, but Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were the best 1980's shows out there. I have seen some Hill Street recently and it has brought be to tears because it reminded me of my wasted youth, and Michael Conrad was so excellent in the show (as well as Michael J. Travanti). Bruce Weitz, who played Belker was a lot like my best high school friend, except not as violent! Damn, that was a great show. Hill Street is dated and does not get enough love since probably not all the people on there went on to greater projects.
I like most Americans watched the original fantastic "Must see Thursdays" on NBC. Cosby, Family Ties, Cheers, and Night Court. I was from a white suburban area, and I dare say that 90% of the student body watched Family Ties every Thursday at 7:30. every one of us watched this show. The show just hit home to each and every one of us. Even President Reagan stated that this was his favorite sitcom. Reagan. I watched it because it was such a good show about a suburban family and yes, for Justine Bateman (what a fox). Of course, speaking of Fox's, Michael J. Fox was an idol to us at the right time. A small statured skinny Canadian guy was a sex idol to all the girll teens (I would also add to the post 1990's younguns, James Spader was also a teen idol of our time, yeah, the weird guy from Boston Legal and The Office) Family Ties WAS the 1980's. Night Court was hilarious. It was a stupid show, but wonderfully, beautifully stupid. I was in college when it was on, and I dare to say, we used to smoke it up to watch this show. This program was very original and hilarious. Markie Post. Damn, we college boys just LOVED her. Justine Bateman was a girl, Markie Post was a WOMAN. Then there is the great John Larroquette. Great actor, great antagonist. The John Larroquette Show should have lasted longer than it did. Basically Dan Fielding running a bus station. Great show. What sucks is that this great, hilarious actor basically fell off the radar after this show (John, like the character, was a AA brother) John probably made a lot of money in those years and retired, but I wish we could have saw more of him. He still does work, but he should have been greater than what he is. Trust me, when this was on, there were thousands upon thousands of us collegians laughing our asses off at this. Night Court also had a lot of heart. Just silly, slapstick comedy. Cheers without saying is a show that was fantastic also, especially in the early seasons, but the whole series. I challenge most anyone to have watched this show and say it sucked. Well, maybe when Kirstie Alley was on it, but the writing was so good, it made Kirstie Alley looked good (a miracle). Cosby Show was Ok, a good family sitcom. It was groundbreaking that a African American family is seen as wealthy and successful. Cosby broke a lot of boundries and we white people just saw him as a TV dad with a TV dad and them being African American was an after thought; so much so that the show in the end stated "hey we are African American!" The Cos' was hilarious non the less and brought the African American experience home to white America, to say, we are just like you. I hate to bring race into this, but it is true. Not poor and downtrodden like Good Times and not (occasionally) combatitive) like The Jeffersons. Just average, wealthy American people with snarky teenagers and a loving marriage. God bless you Cosby, you are a National Treasure. Fat Albert was the must see Saturday morning cartoon of the 1970's, and you made sure we learned a good morality tale from this show (....you may learn something before its done....), thank you Dr. Cosby!!!!! |
