Didn't they just have Chicken and Punch? I'm pretty sure James and Willona didn't literally mean that they were flat broke. I think they meant that they did not have enough money to pay Wanda's rent.

I think not. You can go around and tell your neighbors that you're having a rent party and some might offer money for refreshments and some might just bring food. They could had 4 or 5 families fry up some chicken and buy punch, napkins and chips. I'm pretty sure chicken, punch, chips and napkins doesn't even come close to Wanda's rent amount.
