TV shows from the era of Hogan's Heroes and even well into the 1980's generally ran close to 25:30 per episode, since networks sold a finite number of commercial minutes to advertisers. Obviously, an exception is possible. However, if you notice the run times of Hogan's Heroes episodes throughout the series, they're pretty consistent, with most hovering from 25:15-25:32.
However, one episode caught my eye as I rewatched the series recently. On Season 6, there is an episode called "The Gypsy". Fans will know this is the one where Lebeau poses as a Gypsy to fool Klink into believing his predictions. What caught my eye was the drastically reduced run time compared to other episodes on the DVDs. A full 60-75 seconds shorter than most other episodes on the whole series set. Even on that disc, most episodes ran 25:12-25:17. The Gypsy ran only 24:16 and it had a tag scene. To discover if this was edited, I went to the trouble of ordering an old Columbia House VHS off Amazon for $3. The same exact run time?! The tape having the same version and run time still doesn't prove the episode is unedited. I wonder if there was a scene with Klink playing a violin solo of a popular song not in the public domain or maybe the Heroes playing the radio with a popular 40's song playing? CBS edits out things like that like a bodily function. Does anyone else know anything about this episode? What's missing? Is there a known edit through the years, even in 70's and 80's reruns? Was it just the oddball short episode of the series? This one has me searching for answers because it's so inconsistent with the others. |
