"Who's the gal who's everybody's pal? It's ROSIE!"
If Rosie the Robot on "The Jetsons" gave you the feeling you've seen her before, you did.
Rosie, that "h...o...m...e...l...y" old-fashioned robot George and Jane adopt when Jane suffers from "buttonitis," is apparently based on Shirley Booth's character on "Hazel!" I'm not sure if she was introduced to play off the popularity of the NBC sitcom, but Jean Vander Pyl came as close to copying Shirley Booth as she could without copyright infringement! (And that's no exaggeration. Shirley Booth actually sued Colgate-Palmolive Company in 1971 when an actress imitated her "Hazel" voice in a laundry-detergent commercial.) The flat, dry Brooklyn accent...the references to George as "Mr. J."...and even that dumpy metal body and maid's outfit...that's the mechanical version of Hazel Burke all the way! Not only that, Rosie "may be homely, but she's also "S...M...A...R...T..." |
