Default MeTV now "must carry" in NYC & Philly

This article says MeTV is now on primary TV affiliates in both New York City and Philadelphia. Why is this important? Now cable and satellite providers in those markets must carry MeTV. (The satellite providers have tended to avoid subchannels.) Could this be the big tipping point for the retro networks?

Both Me and Antenna TV should be "must carry" channels all over the country. There is no excuse that 2 of the best channels on TV are not available everywhere via cable, satelite, over the air etc. I don't understand why cable/satellite companies don't Jump at the chance to carry them.

I wish DIRECTV would offer Antenna TV and MeTV.

Whatever happened to RTV? Does it still exist?

Default I really don't see this having any bearing to NYC

As a Northern New Jersey resident, five minutes from GW bridge, really southeast Bergen county I am served by Time Warner Cable locally from the Bergen County Office in Palisades Park, which has an exact duplicated digital line-up as what they offer & serve in Northern & Southern Manhattan, with Cablevision having the rest. TWC also has all of Staten Island and other NY boroughs. Though for techinical reasons the basic first 100 channel line-up is different in New Jersey where all must carry are in the line-up.

I am grateful and pay my cable bill mainly for the full network feeds of METV (Channel 146) and Antenna TV (Channel 166) there are no pre-emptions except for WPIX affliate somehow being attached to the sitcom "Till Death" instead of "Mister Ed" at 3PM eastern.......but i digress........

My point is when a local TV station is an affliate of METV they can carry as many or little hours of it as they wish, as even the NJ near Deleware manager mentioned they plan on doing news as well as some local programming, meaning covering up METV....that is why in the fine print of all METV promos it clearly says "On Most METV stations".....Again thank the TV Gods I have both networks from their national feeds, meaning no pre-emptions.

As For "Must Carry" & "Retransmission Consent" FCC rules, they come with a mileage radious, Only recently We got WLNY (CBS owned TV/55) here in New Jersey because previously it was considered too far from Long Island and was not considered must carry. I don't have the station mentioned with the West coast call letter beginning with a "K" and it cannot be obtained over the air on any still free VHF channel freequencey in NY which hasn't changed in 50 years....New Yorkers will agree nothing ever has been broadcast on over the air Channels 3, 6, 8, 10, & 12 since the beginning of time. The article makes it seem that the station is currently on the air, well if it is and I can't see it over the air, then the cable company cannot get a clear shot at pulling it in either, hence the mileage law.....let alone across the Hudson River into NYC from a station licensed to Southern NJ/Deleware/Philadelphia. Always a whole different animal......

I don't see anything changing, and if it did, for my sake, if the station was carrying METV and was part of TWC, then I'm afraid TWC would consider it a duplicate channel and drop the 24/7 national feed (Channel 146) since it already is carrying the national feed for all of its customers in the NY/NJ metro area.

Food Or TV For thought.......

Yes, DISH offers it. RTV is okay I guess, but it's crumbs compared to MeTV and Antenna TV. Man I wish I could get Antenna TV!

NOW in Philly??? We've had those 2 stations for a while now-we've had ME-TV for close to 3 years and ANTENNA TV since they started 4 years ago. (and the local affiliates carry the ENTIRE schedule.

And my point written extensively two posts up clearly states that there is no affliate or TV station/channel in the NYC/NJ ADI (Area Of Dominant Influence) carrying METV. Perhaps in southern NJ/boarder of PA area and that will NOT FORCE must carry in New York City because the station is too far away in mileage. The writer of the article (not poster) is misinformed or as usual doesn't fully understand what he/she is writing about, as most internet news information is not always highly reliable.

PAV thoughts? No one has disputed my writings as yet with any real educated factual information.

I have WZME out of Bridgeport for my ME-TV affiliate. What happens to WZME? Does that become an RTV affiliate?

I wish they'd do this for MeTv and Antenna TV everywhere. I'd love to have them on Direct TV.

Not now, but there will be. KVNV (which is licensed to Middletown) is not on the air yet and will sign on sometime in the 2nd quarter. Pavan's blog mentioning this (second part): http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2014/0...adds-make.html

Let's hope all of NJ is included.
Especially since Me-TV took 3 of my favorites from Antenna (Adam-12,
Dragnet, and of course Beaver.
(And I wish Til Death didn't interrupt Antenna's showing of Mr.Ed. I like til death, but they keep running the same ones.

I believe the key word here is 'everywhere', but of course that will never happen as long as they stick by their moronic rule that these stations should be US only!
If you want them to be everywhere, then let's see them everywhere, including Canada!
And, like you said, there really should be no excuse, laws and governments be damned!!
No excuses, period!

Usually I personally think it is silly to respond to not fully read posts/quotes, both of my posts were written days before pavs' blog, hence that is why I asked Pav for confirmation which he provided after my posts.

If you read my first post I clearly outlined that the station would have to be on VHF Ch. 3, 6, 8, 10, or 12 which in the history of NY television have never been used. PAV's blog stated (which the article does not) that it will be broadcast on VHF Ch. 3.......so with that said, yes it will qualify for must carry in NYC and northern NJ which are considered in the #1 ADI.

But for those with Time Warner Cable NY/NJ that now have 24/7 full time METV coverage already, TWC will probably drop it now because it will be duplicated programming thus saving money for them & other providers in possible similar situations, when a station opts for must carry the cable company does not have to pay to carry the signal, hence the reason major networks and TV providers get into bitter wars over money when they opt for Retransmission consent which of course the networks can do over the little guys.

Though I do admit I have no knowledge of the Lansing, Michigan TV landscape in which you reside..............

Peace........Retired 40 year television program director.
