NEW YORK (AP) — The actor who played the child-hating agent on the hit 1970s sitcom "The Partridge Family" has died in Florida. Dave Madden was 82. His niece Mary Frances Miller says he died Thursday at a hospice center near his home in the Jacksonville area. Madden was best known for his role as Reuben Kinkaid, who managed the family band and clashed with the precocious pre-teen bassist played by Danny Bonaduce. Before "The Partridge Family," Madden was part of the comedy ensemble on the "Laugh-In" variety series. He later had a recurring role as a customer at Mel's Diner on the long-running sitcom "Alice." Madden was born in Ontario, Canada, and grew up in Terre Haute, Ind. He began show business as a nightclub comic and landed his first acting job on the short-lived sitcom "Camp Runamuck" in the mid-1960s. |

Very sad news. I liked him on The Partridge Family as Reuben & he was also good as Earl on the show Alice. May he rest in peace.

I'm sad to read this. I enjoyed reading his memoir, Reuben on Wry, a few years ago. RIP, Mr. Madden.

Wow, another childhood memory gone...always loved Reuben, particularly his relationship with Danny. I would have put him a bit older than 82; that means he was 38 when the show started.
RIP Dave Madden. |

I was a little kid when I started watching the Partridge Family. While others probably watched it for David Cassidy or Susan Dey, it was the relationship between Danny and Reuben that made me a fan. They were an underrated comedy team. I loved Dave on Alice as well. Very sad. R.I.P. Dave.

January 16, 2014 It’s been a sad day for classic TV fans. On the heels of the news that “Gilligan’s Island” star Russell Johnson passed away at age 89 comes a report that “Partridge Family” alum Dave Madden has also died. According to a January 16 report by TMZ, Madden died of congestive heart and kidney failure early this morning. He was 82. While he was best known for his role as frustrated band manager Reuben Kincaid on the 1970s sitcom about a singing family, Madden also had recurring roles on "Laugh-In” and “Alice.” Following the news of Madden’s death, his “Partridge Family” co-star Danny Bonaduce tweeted: “Dave Madden was a great guy & like family to me. He taught me to drive a car when I was 10. One of many great memories. I'll truly miss him.” On David Cassidy’s official website, this message was posted: “David and all the staff at davidcassidy.com send their best wishes and prayers to Dave Madden’s wife Sandra and his family at this sad time. And actress Shirley Jones told Rumorfix: “Dave was a great person and was one of the reasons ‘The Partridge Family’ worked so well. He will certainly be missed,” “The Partridge Family” aired on ABC from 1970 to 1974 and turned Cassidy into a teen idol. |

Madden played Reuben Kincaid, who managed the family band and clashed with the wisecracking pre-teen bassist played by Danny Bonaduce.
Link Dave Madden, the actor and comedian who played the curmudgeonly band manager on the popular 1970s TV series "The Partridge Family," died Thursday at a hospice in Jacksonville, Fla. He was 82. The cause was complications of the blood disorder myelodysplastic syndrome, said his wife, Sandra Madden. Madden played Reuben Kincaid, who managed the family band and clashed with the wisecracking pre-teen bassist played by Danny Bonaduce. "The Partridge Family" ran on ABC for three seasons starting in 1970 and has endured in reruns. It starred Oscar winner Shirley Jones as a widowed suburban mom who goes on the road with her five musical children, including teen heartthrob David Cassidy as her oldest son. Playing the Partridges' manager was Madden's best-known role in a long acting career that included regular appearances as a member of the comedy ensemble on "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In." He also had a recurring role as a customer at Mel's Diner on the long-running sitcom "Alice." Madden was born Dec. 17, 1931, in Ontario, Canada, and grew up in Terre Haute, Ind. He graduated from the University of Miami, where he majored in radio, TV and film, and served in the U.S. Army Special Forces. He began show business as a magician and nightclub comic and landed his first acting job on the short-lived sitcom "Camp Runamuck" in the mid-1960s. His other TV credits include "Barney Miller," "Love, American Style" and "Bewitched." Madden lived in Los Angeles for four decades before moving to Florida about eight years ago. Besides his wife, his survivors include two children from his first marriage, Selena Madden and Michael Fox; a stepdaughter, Alexandra Martin; a sister; and two grandchildren. |

I always enjoyed him on PF as well as the milk-drinking, confetti-throwing bookworm on "Laugh-In". He will be dearly missed (as he is already).
