I liked the Tildens the best. Charlotte and Molly added a lot to the show.

I prefer the Bowmans. That Kathy was a piece of work. They should have done more with the Bowmans. PTA stuff, for example.

The Tildens. Ty, Charlotte and Molly were great. I always wondered what happened to them. They all just mysteriously disappeared between Season 5 and 6. You were left to assume they moved away since they were never mentioned again, however, I wish they would have become permanent residents next door to the Conner's.

Were there any other neighbours after the Tilden's left? I can't even remember it's been so long. I vaguely recall Joseph Gordon-Levitt appearing in a few of the later Episodes. Was he the new neighbour? |

The Bowmans. The Kathy and Roseanne characters together were great.

I think Roseanne Barr wanted to have nothing to do with Iowa once her marriage to Tom Arnold ended. Thus, the Tildens were gone.

As it is with many sitcoms, it becomes increasingly difficult to balance characters and story lines so, as quickly as they come in, characters are written out. My guess is that the writing staff probably batted around ideas and realized it was a dead end - just as it was with the Bowmans. In the end, the series is about the immediate Conner family and straying too far from that muddles things.
To sum it up - there probably just wasn't enough room for 'em in a full time role. The cast had ballooned already by season five, with Nancy getting more screen time as they start the diner, which then brings Leon back into the fold toward the end of season five, but not until after Roger (Tim Curry) is in a couple episodes - along with Chuckie & Anne-Marie. That's on top of the Conner family, as well as Jackie (who was dating Fisher earlier in the season) and others (this was also the season Bev returns to Lanford and becomes more prominent in the series now that Art has died). This is also the season David moves in with the Conners, so now he's getting a larger role in the series. So, not a surprise they were written out altogether by the end of season five. Just too many characters. Not enough time. |
