CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The oldest surviving actress from 'Gone with the Wind' who called Charleston home died Friday, according to a release. The release from Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community said Alicia Rhett, 98, died at the community, where she'd lived since 2002. Rhett was born on Feb. 1, 1915 in Savannah, GA. She was an American portrait painter and actress who is best remembered for her role as India Wilkes in he 1939 film, 'Gone with the Wind.' She was the oldest surviving cast member. Rhett moved to Charleston with her mother after her father died in World War I. She graduated from Memminger High School. "Truly a beautiful woman, her passion for the arts and love of Charleston were unrivaled," said Bill Trawick, president and CEO of Bishop Gadsden. "Alicia was a kind and gentle lady al through her life and we were honored to have her as a resident." According to the release, a private memorial is planned. |
