I've never felt that S5 was that weak. I was never an Aunt Clara fan as I felt her character was rather one-note so I didn't miss Marion Lorne at all. As much as I loved Dick York in the part, the Darrin-less episodes these season rank among my favorites of the entire series. "Mrs. Stephens, Where Are You?", "Samantha's Power Failure", "Samantha's Shopping Spree" are all perfect choices for fans who loved it when the series explored the 'witch' side of life over the goings-on at McMann & Tate.
"Tabitha's Weekend" as you said features some of the greatest icy banter between Endora and Phyllis, as well as Tabitha's best spell ever (love Sam's reaction to the smiling raisin cookie as well as Aggie's line reading "Flower bowl...flower bowl, are you Grandmama's pretty little Tabitha?"). I agree that Part 1 of "Cousin Serena Strikes Again" is far superior to the conclusion with the dinner party sequence being the highlight of the episode. Love how the music cues match up with the characters' reactions each time Serena delivers a zinger about Cleo Vinita. Also glad to see you put "Willow", "Spouse" and "South" on the list. I would have also picked "Mexico City". |

I agree with the list. A stand out episode for me was Samantha's Power Failure I really liked the episode with Uncle Arthur and Serena. Their ode to I Love Lucy was cool imo made the classic lines just as funny.

I have a question: In "Samantha's Power Failure", if Dick York wasn't in the episode, who is that in bed with Elizabeth at the beginning when Endora (the bright light) comes into the bedroom to get Samantha to tell her about the witches’ council? You can see the guy and it ain't DY.
You'd think if they did this scene and had to have a man in there with her, they'd have him facing AWAY from the camera where you'd only see the back of his head since he has no speaking lines anyway.

Really? I'm looking at it right now and maybe it's because it's dark, but him laying there really doesn't look like York that much.

That same footage was also used in S3's "The Trial and Error of Aunt Clara". Strange the same scene was used THREE different times.
You can tell though in "Samantha's Power Failure" that it's from an earlier time period since right after Sam says "Mother, will you stop bouncing around like TinkerBell and tell me what this is about" the new footage starts and Sam's hair has grown about 6 inches. |
