We sort of got that in animated form with "The Fonz and The Happy Days Gang" cartoon series. Fonzie later appeared in "The Laverne & Shirley/Mork & Mindy/Fonz Hour" as well.

I think that was actually considered at one point, if I recall correctly... I love "Laverne & Shirley"- such a great show. And Lenny and Squiggy were hilarious too.

TV sitcoms always have it where the person always steals the show from the other cast members Steve Urkel from Family Matters and Will Smith from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air they could have missed a couple of episodes.

Steve Urkel did miss a few episodes of Family Matters. His character was originally only meant as a guest star appearance in one episode. But since he proved to be so popular, he became a regular and then began to dominate the show. Even so, I still love the series. But I don't see Steve Urkel getting a spinoff series.
With Will Smith- it would be harder for him to miss episodes of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"- after all, he was the titular character and usually the one driving the action and plot. I also don't really see any spinoff series for him.
Spinoffs usually come about from scene stealers and other background characters. I think Jazz might be a more likely choice for a spinoff series- though I don't know that I'd really care that much to see it.

Though here's one series where a spinoff was attempted and had it worked, I would have watched it- a late 7th. season episode of "MacGyver" was aired called "The Coltons"- and it was intended as a pilot based around the Colton family of bounty hunters. I think it could have worked- I would have watched it.

There was an episode of Matlock with George Peppard and his daughter as detectives. It seemed so obvious that it was a backdoor pilot episode. I don't really lie those backdoor pilots that have nothing really to do with the parent show, but it makes sense from a business perspective. 'The PI' was an entertaining episode and it would probably have made a decent weekly series.

There was an episode of 'Hawaii Five-O' about a vigilante, he was played by Harvey Keitel and Rod Stewart's 'Do You Think I'm Sexy' played throughout. The character died at the end, but it was a memorable character and episode.

Happy Days should've ended after the end of the 80-81 season when Lori and her newborn child left town to join Richie. The later seasons where Fonzie was 'Dean of Students' (guidance counselor) should've been a re-christened spin-off series with the Cunninghams recurring since Fonzie would still living in town.

Niles and Daphne should've spun-off from Frasier. They were a cute couple, and with the right 'new' setting and cast of characters they could've been to 'Frasier' what 'Frasier' was to 'Cheers.'

Unpopular opinion, but I wish Kramer was spun-off of Seinfeld, he was such a popular character back in the day. IMO he was the main reason to watch Seinfeld, he was the FUNNY guy. Lots of good physical manuvering and zonked-out behavior, MR was a gifted comedic performer.

Raymond should've spun off his brother played by Brad Garrett (sp).

I'm surprised they haven't tried to reboot MacGyver with his son or something like that. That's the approach they took with the new Knight Rider, while that revival was a dud I did appreciate how they made the new lead Michael Knight's son, thus passing the torch so to speak. I remember that Mac had a drown son at the end of the series. I actually started watching MacGyver during the summer of '92 after the finale aired and ABC was burning off episodes that they skipped, much like they did with Happy Days back in '84.

Actually, "they" did. Back in 2003- a pilot called "Young MacGyver" was produced. It starred Jared Padalecki and it isn't too bad. However, he plays the role of Clay MacGyver- Angus MacGyver's nephew. One problem- MacGyver is an only child. So unless MacGyver discovers a long-lost brother that his parents never told him about, it doesn't make sense for him to have a nephew. They would have done better to just have Dalton James in there as SAM (Sean Angus Malloy). [That was MacGyver's son from the series finale episode of the series.]
If you're interested, you can read more about it here- http://www.macgyveronline.com/pages/youngmacgyver.html

you can watch the pilot here.
