Movie New "Friday the 13th" Set for May 13, 2016

Paramount Sets Date for Next Friday the 13th Film!
by Ryan Turek
November 26th 2013

A new Friday the 13th film is indeed coming. Paramount has confirmed this by locking in a release date of March 13, 2015. (yes, that's on Friday the 13th)

While there is not much to report on during this time, we do know that Platinum Dunes will be producing and there have been rumors of a "found footage" approach to the project.

There is no word yet on info. regarding the director, writers, cast and where this new entry stands in the franchise. Will it be a new stand-alone film, a sequel to the 2009 remake, or a sequel to the original franchise ... we don't know yet.

Warner Bros. relinquished the rights to the franchise back in June and gave them back to Paramount. The studio has five years to get a new entry in theaters before those rights go back to WB.

We'll keep you all posted as more information comes in.

I'm a fan of the original Friday the 13th movies. The original is a horror classic and part 3 and The Final Chapter are very good. I also think part 2, Jason Lives, New Blood and Jason Takes Manhattan are good movies. However, there is a point where enough is enough and I think the Friday films passed that point 20 years ago.

The found footage idea doesn't please me one bit, all that shaky cam doesn't work on a F13 film, I'd rather they just pick up where the reboot left off and improve it (if possible) with a good story.

I'm not that familiar with rightholders and such but why would the rights revert back to WB, wouldn't they just stay with Paramount since WB did after all relinquish them over.

I love found footage. I love Friday the 13th (well, mainly 1 thru 5), but the two together? No thanks. Unless it's Jason using the camera...wait, Jason could have the camera attached to his hockey mask! But seriously, no.

Of course my curiosity will get the better of me and I will watch it, after all it couldn't be worse than Jason Takes Manhattan, Jason Goes To Hell, or Jason X.

It could be that the terms of agreement require them to release a new film within a certain timeline (in this case 5 years) to keep hold of the rights.

A similar thing happened w/ the Hellraiser franchise. Dimension released a straight-to-video flick to keep the rights to the franchise since the proposed remake/reboot hasn't been moving forward that fast.

Exclusive: Brad Fuller Updates on New Friday the 13th; Confirms It’s Not Found Footage
by Samuel Zimmerman
May 18, 2015

We recently spoke to Brad Fuller, best known as co-founder — alongside Michael Bay and Andrew Form — of Platinum Dunes, for an update on the new Friday the 13th film set for May 13, 2016.

I could just say that for a long time we were stalled,” Fuller tells Shock. “There were reports that we were going to do a found footage movie and that was a road that we went down and tried to figure out. Ultimately, I think Michael, Drew and I felt that we couldn’t figure that out, so we kind of jettisoned that whole notion and we had to start over.

We’re in the latter phases of that starting over and hopefully we’re getting a script in the next month or two, and we’ll go back to Crystal Lake.

Fuller said the fan negativity of the found footage reports had a direct impact on the movie's approach.

There was an outpouring of negative sentiment when it was revealed that Friday the 13th might have been a found footage movie. That was very clear to us that there was not a groundswell of support for that. That had tremendous amount of impact on us and only substantiated our concern about doing it as a found footage movie.

Ultimately, the fact that the movie’s been delayed for a long time might be a good thing, because now the movie’s not going to be found footage.

It seems with the discarding of found footage, the Dunes producers also saw clearly what many want from a Friday the 13th film.

At the end of the day, those movies are so fantastic because Jason Voorhees is such a dynamic presence and people love to see him do what he does well. We hope to put Jason in a situation where he’s able to do that again, and it doesn’t feel like you’re seeing the same thing over and over,” Fuller adds.
