First there was Lucy, then there was Mary Tyler Moore, could Julia Louise Dreyfuss be the next Queen of Sitcoms??? I know, I know, she's had only one successful sitcom( And yes she wasn't even the star) and even though 'Watching Ellie' is an early ratings winner, the jury is still out. However, if her new show is proven a winner, would it be fair to give her that title? After all, she was loveable on SNL, she stole the show on the short lived Day by Day, and I don't think anybody could argue her strong presence on Seinfeld. My vote is yes! People seem to love Julia!!!

The jury is still out on "Watching Ellie."
If she can have success with two sitcoms, like Lucy And Mary Tyler Moore, then maybe we should schedule the coronation. |

The original queens of comedy were Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett.
Lucille Ball had her run in the 1950's through the early 70's starring in her own sitcoms: I Love Lucy (1951-1957), The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour (1957-1960), The Lucy Show (1962-1968), and Here's Lucy (1968-1974). Carol Burnett made her comedy debut, I think, on The Lucy Show which led her to have her own variety show entitled The Carol Burnett Show. The Carol Burnett Show was an instant success and so it ran from 1967 to 1979. Mary Tyler Moore has never been remembered as one of the "Queen of Comedies" like Lucy and Carol. Mary Tyler Moore's comedy was far different from Lucy's and Carol's. Lucy and Carol were for laughs, while Mary dealt on serious topics. |

I don't think MTM was as physically funny as Lucy or Carol Burnett. I mean, everytime Carol Burnett stepped on to the Mama's Family set, after it had been spun-off, made the show 140% better. And Lucy was just a natural born clown. Even though according to this book I'm reading called "The Lucy Book", could be a real b*tch sometimes. Anyhoo, MTM's two shows were basically just cleverly written and always had top-notch actors.

Carol Burnett's real television start was on The Garry Moore Show, which is a variety show, for those who haven't heard of it.
