Walker scores 31, Bobcats hang on to defeat reeling Nets

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- For the second successive season the Charlotte Bobcats are off to a strong start.

But this time around, point guard Kemba Walker feels a lot more confident about the chances of sustaining that success.

The Bobcats just might if Walker continues to play as he did on Wednesday night. The third-year pro scored a season-high 31 points and the Bobcats handed the turnover-prone Brooklyn Nets their sixth loss in their past seven games 95-91.

The win lifts the Bobcats to 6-6 on the season.

They started 7-5 last season under former coach Mike Dunlap before losing 18 consecutive games and finishing 21-61, the second-worst record in the league. Dunlap was fired.

This season, the Bobcats are finding success despite playing nine games without their best player, center Al Jefferson, who has been in and out of the lineup with an ankle injury.

"We are capable of a lot and being really, really good," Walker said. "We just have to be more consistent. Al is definitely going to help us a lot because he draws a lot of attention.

"If I can keep on having nights like this when he comes back it will be great for us. With Gerald [Henderson] and Ramon [Sessions] and our other role players I think we'll be a tough team to play against every night."

New coach Steve Clifford believes the Bobcats haven't started to tap their potential and believes the good start isn't a mirage.

"We're defending and rebounding," Clifford said. "We have yet to play any sustained time with our best offensive player. We're playing younger guys so there is a lot of room for improvement."

Clifford said he hopes to have Jefferson back for Friday night's game against Phoenix.

The Nets, meanwhile, aren't so sure about when Deron Williams will return to the court after he sprained his ankle in the second quarter when he landed on Walker's foot and his foot twisted inward. He fell to the floor in pain, holding his ankle.

He did not return to the game and finished with four points and two assists in 14 minutes.

"We don't know how long he's going to be out but, hopefully it's a speedy recovery," Nets coach Jason Kidd said.

Walker finished 12 of 20 from the field and knocked down four 3-pointers as the Bobcats snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Nets. The Bobcats nearly lost a 10-point lead with less than three minutes, but Walker hit two free throws with 6.1 seconds left to seal the win.

Walker said he's been spending more time in the gym working on his jump shot and it paid off getting back to the basics.

"Lately I have been taking a lot of off-balanced shots and making it tough for myself," Walker said.

The Bobcats outscored the Nets 52-34 in the paint.

"We were just being aggressive and took whatever they gave us," Walker said. "There were a lot of open lanes and we took them and were able to score."

With owner Michael Jordan sitting on the end of the bench, the Bobcats started the second half with a 15-1 run to take control of the game. Walker had eight points during the stretch.

The Bobcats led 53-50 at halftime behind 58 percent shooting from the floor. Walker led the way with 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting.

Andray Blatche led the Nets with a season-high 25 points while Joe Johnson added 19.

However, the Nets had 18 turnovers and fell to 3-8.

"Fifty-two points in the paint is unacceptable," Blatche said. "Thirty-plus points in a quarter is unacceptable. It's our song all season. We keep saying it's early, but until we buckle down on defense, it's going to be the same results. We've got to take pride because it's embarrassing. It's real embarrassing."

Said Kidd: "The defense is something that we've got to get better at. It's something that we were working on the preseason and was something we thought coming into the season we could hold our hat on."

Charlotte continues to play good defense, holding its opponent to under 100 points for the ninth time in 12 games.

Notes: Gerald Henderson scored 13 points and finished in double digits for the 10th time this season. ... Nets guard Alan Anderson had a season-high 16 points. ... The Bobcats are 6-1 in games decided by six points or fewer.

Grizzlies go 4-0 on West Coast, outlast Curry-less Warriors

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Mike Conley shook off a rough shooting night to make a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1:36 left in overtime and the Memphis Grizzlies held on to beat the Golden State Warriors 88-81 on Wednesday.

Tayshaun Prince added a pair of long jumpers over the final 56 seconds, including an 18-footer with 24.8 seconds remaining to help seal the Grizzlies' 11th consecutive victory against the Warriors.

Conley finished with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists while Zach Randolph had 21 points and 12 rebounds. The win completed a four-game West Coast sweep for Memphis.

Andrew Bogut had 12 points and 14 rebounds for Golden State, which played without guard Stephen Curry.

Memphis trailed most of the first half and was down 70-66 in the fourth quarter before rallying to force overtime on Marc Gasol's two free throws with 2:02 left.

Both teams missed chances to win it in regulation before the Grizzlies pulled away over the final two minutes of overtime to hand the Warriors their first home loss of the season.

Conley had missed 10 of his 18 shots before sinking a wide-open jumper from beyond the arc to give Memphis an 82-79 lead. After Prince followed with a 21-foot jumper, Bogut scored on an alley-oop from Andre Iguodala to cut the gap to 84-81.

Prince made another long jumper and Gasol added two free throws for the Grizzlies.

Golden State, which had won four straight since losing to Memphis by 18 on Nov. 9, fell short in a bid to match its best start since 1991-92.

Curry was held out after sustaining a mild concussion from hitting his head on the floor diving for a loose ball during Golden State's win at Utah on Monday. The Warriors' second-leading scorer, Curry sat on the bench but received a rousing ovation from the crowd when a video tribute of his record-setting 3-point season from a year ago played on the scoreboard.

That forced coach Mark Jackson to shuffle his lineup. Iguodala ran the point in Curry's absence, finishing with 14 assists, while Harrison Barnes made his second start of the season.

It worked early for the Warriors.

Barnes had 10 points in the first quarter to help Golden State build a 26-16 lead. The Warriors also got a lift when Iguodala split a double-team by Gasol and Conley near the top of the key and dunked.

A pair of jumpers from Thompson pushed Golden State's lead to 32-20 in the second. Memphis, which shot 35 percent in the first half, couldn't get closer than seven and trailed by 10 at halftime.

The Grizzlies trailed by seven early in the third when Randolph and Conley scored four points apiece as part of a 10-0 run that helped give Memphis a slim lead heading into the fourth.

Randolph, who had 23 points and 11 rebounds in the first meeting between the teams, struggled with his shot most of the night and finished 9 of 22 from the floor.

Notes: Jackson was unsure whether Curry would play Friday against the Lakers. ''We're fortunate, because looking at the video it could have been a lot worse,'' Jackson said. I see your basketball topics aren't getting any responses hahahahahahaha. I'm not laughing at you but most of the people that post in the sports forum are lame. I love NBA basketball and it's good to see somebody post about it. I saw the Nets lost to the Bobcats LOL. Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce should've retired last season. Nets management feels like a fool for paying them a lot of money i bet because they aren't gonna win a championship this year and i hope they retire after this season.

anyway, I think that teams like the Bobcats, Heat and Knicks are trying to stack the deck too much by havin' all these superstars wanting to win a title or want too much money

and that's why the Eastern Conference isn't getting too much respect from TRUE NBA Fans, but ESPN wants to shove teams like them down our throats so much, they blow it way out of proportion

That's why I thank GOD for the CBS Sports Network, NBC Sports Network and TNT, they know how to give people their fair share, but most of all, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O'Neal know what they are talking about and they speak the truth even if we agree or disagree

CBS and NBC networks don't show NBA games anymore. ABC network shows NBA games during christmas and in the spring and summer when the playoffs start. TNT and ESPN show NBA games also. I saw the Nets lost to Minnesota last night by 30 points 111-81 hahahahahahahahahahahaha. I really hope Garnett and Pierce retire after this season. I'm gonna laugh if the Nets don't make the playoffs and they're playing so bad right now that it's possible they won't make it LOL. Nets management are stupid for paying Garnett, Pierce, Jason Terry a lot of money. Jason Kidd might not last long as their coach if the Nets continue to lose.

I know, but I was talking about the CBS Sports Network and NBC Sport Network showing highlights of sports including the NBA, but I was also saying that I don't do too much sportscenter b/c to me, they blow things WAY out of proportion
