Cool Monty Python To Reunite on Stage for the First Time in 30 Years

Monty Python To Reunite on Stage for the First Time in 30 Years
Nov 19, 2013
by Hanh Nguyen

Let the silly walks commence! Monty Python is reuniting for the first time in 30 years, the BBC reports.

"We're getting together and putting on a show actually. It's real," Terry Jones told the BBC. "I'm quite excited about it. I hope it makes us a lot of money. I hope to be able to pay off my mortgage!"

Living members of the British comedy troupe John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin and Jones will come together for a stage show, which will be announced officially at a press conference on Thursday in London, where the Monty Python-inspired musical Spamalot is currently running.

The sixth member, Graham Chapman, died in 1989.

Monty Python first hit the scene with their surreal sketch comedy show "Monty Python's Flying Circus", which ran from 1969-1974.

Some of their most iconic and frequently quoted sketches include "The Minsitry of Silly Walks," "Dead Parrot," "The Lumberjack Song," "Nudge Nudge" and "Cheese Shop."

Their films include sketch projects And Now for Something Completely Different and Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl.

Their more traditional films include Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life.

Official: Monty Python To Reunite for Live Stage Show at London’s 02 Arena In 2014
by NANCY TARTAGLIONE, International Editor
21 November 2013

After leaking word of a reunion earlier this week, the surviving members of Monty Python made it official today in London. At a press conference, Eric Idle, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin and Terry Jones announced they would perform live on stage next year for the first time in nearly four decades.

The show, which was billed in an official release as a “final reunion. Sort of,” will be televised and will see the legendary comedy troupe come together on July 1, 2014 for a live performance at London’s 02 Arena.

Tickets will go on sale on November 25th.

Idle, who will direct, said one of the reasons for pulling the event together was, “If we left it too long, it would be too late.

It is currently planned as a one-time only performance, but a tour is not out of the question, the group said. There will be a mix of new material and old, although Cleese noted, “People really want to see the old hits, but we don’t want to do them in a predictable way.

Warwick Davis oversaw the press conference, which streamed live via several outlets and was broadcast on Sky News for a Monty Python-mad UK audience.

The Pythons’ last feature film together was 1983′s Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life.

Monty Python London Reunion Show Run Extended to Five Nights
11/25/13
by Georg Szalai

The Monty Python reunion stage show on July 1 sold out quickly on Monday, with organizers immediately announcing four additional dates.

The show will now be staged July 1-5 at London's O2 Arena, operated by live event promoter AEG Live, with known, but updated comedic material from the group.

The BBC reported Monday that the initially announced single show sold out within less than a minute after tickets went on sale at 10 a.m. London time, leading to the announcement of additional dates within less than an hour.

Later in the day, all shows were shown as having sold out on the ticketing site.

Monty Python London Reunion Adds *More* Show Dates
11/27/13
by Stuart Kemp

Monty Python founding member John Cleese on Wednesday described strong public demand for tickets to the U.K. comedy troupe's reunion show in the British capital as "very, very silly" as the group added yet more dates.

"The response to our planned reunion has been very, very silly. But we're all touched that so many fans still want to see such old people perform. So we're delighted to be adding more dates to the run at the O2."

The reunion show on July 1 at the British capital's O2 Arena, operated by live event promoter AEG Live, sold out in 43.5 seconds on Monday, which led to the immediate addition of four more dates through July 5.

Those sold out in a matter of hours, so the Pythons said on Wednesday that they would perform another five shows of Monty Python Live (mostly) from July 15 through July 20. Tickets will go on sale on Friday.

The sixth Python, Graham Chapman, died in 1989, hence the word "mostly" in the show title. It is also believed to refer to the expected use of video and projections during the stage shows.

There is still speculation, but no confirmation, that the troupe may reveal plans for a turn at L.A.'s Hollywood Bowl, the setting for one of Pythons' most remembered live outings in Sept. 1980.

Cleese had described that show as one of his favorite Monty Python memories.

Cool

It's cool these guys are doing this while they are all still healthy enough to do so. It's just a shame that Graham Chapman died so young and won't be part of the reunion.
