TV David Tom Returns to "Y&R" as Billy Miller Decides to Leave

Daytime Drama: David Tom Returning To "Y&R", Replacing Billy Miller
by Matt Webb Mitovich
11/18/13

At "The Young and the Restless", one Daytime Emmy-winning Billy is out, and another Daytime Emmy-winning Billy is in.

David Tom, who originated the role of grown Billy Abbott on the long-running CBS sudser, is returning to Genoa City. He succeeds Billy Miller, who has decided to exit the show.

TV Guide Magazine soap guru Michael Logan broke the news on Twitter Monday evening.

"WOW! Massive @CBSDaytime NEWS! #BillyMiller OUT at @YandR_CBS and guess who's the NEW Billy Abbott??? DAVID TOM is BACK! Deets 2Morrow AM!"

CBS Daytime boss Angelica McDaniels followed with confirmation.

"Please join me in welcoming Daytime Emmy winner David Tom back to #YR and @CBSDaytime as Billy Abbott’s exciting storyline continues."

"I respect Billy Miller's decision to move on and wish him great success in his future endeavors."

Tom made his debut as Y&R‘s SORASed Billy (who up until then had been played by tots and tykes) in June 1999, and stayed with the serial until summer of 2002. Over the course of that run, he earned two Daytime Emmys nods, converting on one.

Miller, the third young adult actor to play Billy, made his Y&R debut in September 2008, amassing two Daytime Emmys wins among three nominations.

Details of the transition timing — last and first airdates and what not — are expected on Tuesday.

This is insanity!!! It might be a good thing, but I haven't decided yet. David Tom used to be the ONLY Billy who could play the role. Whenever they tried to re-cast him, they failed miserably...until finding Billy Miller. Billy Miller absolutely owned the role, above and beyond what David ever did. This is craaaaaaazy. I never thought the show would ever see David Tom again.

Exclusive: Billy Miller Exits "The Young and the Restless" as David Tom Returns
Nov 19, 2013
by Michael Logan

A Y&R rep tells TV Guide Magazine that "the show wanted Billy Miller to stay and worked hard to make that happen but we are going in another direction now. We are very excited to have David Tom back in the role. Not only is he a terrific actor, it will give us an opportunity to dig into our archives and use some of those great old Glow by Jabot flashbacks."

Adds the rep: "We say a big thank you to Billy Miller and wish him well in all his future endeavors."

Miller, now in the middle of a major plot involving the hit-and-run death of Billy Abbott's daughter, will continue shooting at Y&R until Dec. 19. He will last be seen on the show Jan. 30.

Tom is scheduled to hit the air Feb. 3.

While I will miss Billy Miller, it will be nice to see David Tom back on the show.

It's funny that the current power couple of Billy & Victoria used to be portrayed by siblings David and Heather Tom, back when the characters had nothing to do with each other.

It's a shame Billy Miller is leaving. He has been simply a powerhouse in that role, so if he has to leave, I'm glad David Thom is returning. He played the role very differently when he was originally on the show, so it will be interesting to see how he alters (or doesn't) his performance as Billy.

Didn't care for DT back in the day, but i'm glad they are opting for a familiar face rather than a newbie in. The character has grown over the years, it will be interesting to see DT's take as OldNuBilly.

Wow!! Thats very shocking. Say what you will about the storyline but Miller has been hitting it out of the park with the Delia storyline.

David Tom was excellent at portraying a teenage Billy. I look forward to seeing him portray Billy as an adult.
