You nailed it. Lou was overbearing at times, but considering the era he came from you can totally buy he was just a normal dad worrying about his "little girl". Plus you did see times when he realized he went over the top. Remember the episode where he and Donald obsessed over the board game? Just as he was starting to get mean spirited, he told himself he was acting like a jerk. So when he went back to playing with Donald, this time the arguments were good-natured.

One of my favorite episodes is The Rivals, where Mr. Marie is jealous of Donald. I think he can't help himself he is SO protective of his little girl, LOL.

I think Lou Marie was both, plus he also had his wife to help keep him in line.

I agree. He was overbearing because he felt so protective of his little girl. If he did not have his wife to keep him in line, he would have REALLY gone nuts I bet!

In my opinion, I think Lou was too overbearing. Sometimes to the point of being annoying. I understand he was worried about Ann and who wouldn't be worried when their daughter is moving from home to a city like NYC. However I think he gave Don a hard time for no reason. It's not like Ann was dating some loser, long haired, out of work, hippy. Don was well educated, successful, charming, intelligent, kind to Ann and NOT perve. You would think Lou would love him. He was happy when Don's twin(not really) Dr. Kennedy was with Ann, in her bedroom, just because he was a doctor. But he WAS a perve!

Oh, Dr. K was a skeevo, LOL. I think Mr. Marie was jealous because Ann loved Don and she wasn't really "his" "little girl" anymore. It drove him nuts, poor guy!

But I think in the end, Lou accepted Don. The stag party episode attests to that.

Yes, that's right. Ann's father was finally able to accept Don. Happy endings for all.

The wife keeping Lou in line true from seasons 1-4 after that she became the invisible woman.

Something I just found out fairly recently, but Lou Marie was supposed to be played by Groucho Marx, of all people!
(I'll have to find the interview for that some other time.)

It's probably just as well that he didn't get the part. First, he would've been so busy cracking jokes and ad-libbing, they'd be lucky they could finish a scene. Second, nobody would've bought a lovable goofus like Groucho Marx as such an uptight overbearing Dad.
