Movie Reviews: Carrie

The latest adaptation of Stephen King's 1974 novel, Carrie, has received a series of negative reviews ahead of its release in the US today (18th October).

The film stars Chloe Grace Moretz as Carrie and Julianne Moore as her mother Margaret. Carrie has the supernatural gift of telekinesis and, after being bullied at her high school, uses her powers to destroy her tormentors.

Katey Rich of The Guardian stated:

"Carrie eventually devolves into lacklustre modern horror clichés for a souped-up version of the famous finale."

Bruce Demara of the Toronto Star described the 2013 film as:

"a pallid imitation of the original."

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter wrote Carrie is:

"more effective and less overblown than many unnecessary horror remakes, but it can't compare with the original."

Betsy Sharkey of the L.A. Times claimed:

"Carrie should have delivered more with the material in the filmmaker's feminist hands."

Everyone I've talked to who has seen it, and reading comments from people on the 'net- it's not an adaptation of King's book, but a direct remake of the 1976 film, which is why Lawrence Cohen who wrote the screenplay for the original is credited.

I wouldn't have minded if someone did another adaptation of the book, so we would at least get a different version.

I saw the new Carrie film yesterday. It does take a main plot from the book and use it, unlike the 1976 film. The new film also has a different ending than the 1976 film. The original movie is better (of course!), but I think this version is worth seeing at least once. I think the biggest problem with this new version is that it lacks subtlety and some parts are unintentionally funny. For example, Carrie sitting in the cafeteria with huge books that have "Telekinesis" in bold lettering across the top.

I've heard its truer to the book than the original

However I have yet to see the movie or read the book
