would I be able to record pre-recorded VHS tapes to DVDs, like tapes that I buy of movies and TV shows? I mean would I break some copyright law?

As long as you dont sell them to anyone, to make profit off them, no you cant get into trouble. At least I dont think you can.

A DVD recorder will not allow you to record a copyrighted VHS tape to dvd.

You can try your luck AND YOU SHOULD. Some will be blocked but others won't. I had some esoteric old movies I liked and was able to transfer. And thank God. I hate VHS, at least with my combo unit - it's destroyed at least eight tapes so far. DVDs are much easier for me to store as I have very limited space.

I have about a dozen Vhs tapes I would like transferred. Home movies of my family that I took in the 1990's. So as long as you don't sell them you can copy. No I can't see my selling my videos.
Then I have a camcorder 8mm tapes that I should transfer over too. I don't have a dvd recorder. So hard in this world when everything keeps changing. |

You don't need a VHS recorder to do it, you just need the right programs, and a video capture card/device for your computer.
I record VHS, Beta, and Laser Discs that haven't been released onto DVD yet, also home videos that we want backed up. |

sounds complicated; I'll stick with the DVD recorder/VCR.
