Question Mayberry RFD Boned the Fish When...

http://www.bonethefish.com/viewtopics.php?3805

Quote:
Mayberry R.F.D. (R.F.D stands for "Rural Free Delivery" an allusion to the "out of the way" location and lifestyle the program represented) is a spin-off and direct continuation of The Andy Griffith Show under a new title, for the same sponsor, General Foods. When Andy Griffith decided to leave his series, most of the supporting characters returned for the new program, which ran for three seasons (78 color episodes) on the CBS Television Network from 1968-1971. During the final season of The Andy Griffith Show, widower farmer Sam Jones (Ken Berry) and his young son Mike (Buddy Foster) are introduced; the two then become the focus of the sequel series. Sheriff Andy Taylor and newlywed wife Helen make guest appearances until late 1969, and are then written out. The show's first episode had the highest ratings in recorded television history (1968), and the series was popular throughout its entire run. It was canceled in CBS's infamous "rural purge" of 1971.

I don't get the second option: When Andy And Barney Left. Andy only made two guest appearances, and Barney was never on this show. So there's really no difference between Option 1 and Option 2.

Maybe the confusion if you want to call it that stems from the notion that Mayberry RFD is just The Andy Griffith Show under a different name.

Cool

When Andy decided to walk away that should have been the end of this show. Carrying on under a new title and with a few new characters was doomed to pale in comparison to the "Andy" episodes!

Andy was on more than 2 times. He was a frequent guest during season one and Barney was in the first show.

As for when it JTS, it never did. It was never as good as the original AGS but was a pleasant enough show that fit in well with the other rural shows at that time.

One thing that I do find funny is how RFD was ignored on the Return to Mayberry reunion. Andy & Helen did have another son Andy, Jr. and he was ignored in that movie. lol

IMO RFD was always good it's name meant for the citizens in Mayberry which is what the show was built around. Seen an excellent interview with Ken Berry he clarifies things and talks about his career, really interesting.

Why isn't "when Aunt Bee left", not an choice? That's when I think RFD boned the shark!

True, one option might have been "When Aunt Bea left".

It did fare a lot better than AfterMASH but it was the same problem.

As we are trying to understand and/or explain in another, current, thread.

There was an Andy Jr. and is strange how the writers and actors will just ignore something like that, leaving the dedicated viewers just hanging.

Okay, I forgot, why do fans insist on calling her "Aunt Bee" rather than the more natural (to me) Aunt Bea?

Short for Beatrice, of course.

Ron Howard keeps losing his TV brothers. Same thing happened on Happy Days with Chuck.

There are a few episodes of The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show where actress Bea Benaderet's name is misspelled as "Bee" in the credits.
