Default If Tony had found a male genie instead of Jeannie?

What do you think would have happened if Tony found a male Genie instead of Jeannie?

Assuming he's not the Blue Djinn, he would prolly want to serve Tony, but do you think Tony would have still kept him around, and do you think they would have just hung out as like friends?

I think you might have a new pilot for the 2014-2015 season

Seriously, that would definitely make for an interesting show, especially today.

It could have worked if Tony already had either a girlfriend or a wife, some kind of long-term relationship with a woman. Tony would continue to be the only one that could command the djinni, but it could also cause some sexual tension (that so many people absolutely love) between the djinni and the GF/wife. And then you could introduce female djinn into the picture as relatives, friends, and so forth.

Care to write it now?

Remember Disney's Aladdin? Robin Williams voiced a great male genie and he helped Aladdin find love and Jasmine became friends with Genie. So it could work between Tony and a male genie.

Yes, I remember it

However, that was a single story told, much like the pilot of IDoJ was a single story. The problem is that you then have to stretch that story out over multiple seasons. And yes, I know they did the cartoon series as well. But, if we're talking about having an IDoJ-like premise, then it would have to be different than Disney's version of the Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp story (including nixing all of Disney's "rules" the djinni couldn't do, as we saw Jeannie counter throughout the existing series.)

I'm not proposing that it couldn't work with a male djinni, only that having it be almost nothing more than a "Platonic friendship" between guys doesn't offer the other appeal we have with the current series: that of a sexy (and jealous) djinni. Unless you're going to make it more than friendship between Tony and the djinni, you've just lost that secondary appeal to audiences.

Now you could keep that part of the original and still have your male djinni. Just have both a male and female djinni come out of the bottle, with all the "love at first sight" by the girl, and then a rivalry between the two djinn over who gets to serve the master the most or in what ways. Double the trouble! "

If it were a male genie, I guess it could focus more on him getting Tony into trouble by trying to help, then somehow saving the day at the end.

Yes, it could be exactly like the show now, minus all of the relationship issues and plots you get with a man and woman situation.

So, edit out all of the romance, jealousies, sexual tension, and visual sexual appeal that we have now for what a "best buddies" version of IDoJ would look like

Well also you know there are some possesive friends lol

So he could be like, "Tony is MY friend, we're hanging out, so Roger and everyone else just BACK OFF!!" lol

I guess, if that's what y'all would like. It wouldn't really appeal to me, and would become more like the not-so-successful show You Wish.

A genie version of Uncle Arthur. That would have been hysterical.

Well I was thinking that, but I know that would not have worked back then.

Paul Lynde was gay and his character worked on Bewitched.

Yes, but his character was never identified or portrayed as gay. Most audiences would probably not even know the term unless the derogatory words were used to identify him that way.

As I understand the OP, our topic was supposed to be about how such a pairing would have worked in the original show, in its original time period. 'Gay' simply would not have worked in the 1960s. It either wouldn't have sold the pilot at all, or have been canceled mid-season, and then where would we all be now without this show?
