Gandolfini, Monteith, Stapleton, Winters and Goldberg To Receive Special Tributes at Emmys
Tributes will come in addition to traditional In Memoriam segment Link Each of the tributes, which will come in addition to the traditional In Memoriam segment, will be delivered by a colleague who had a close relationship with them. For Gandolfini, it will be “The Sopranos” co-star Edie Falco. Former “Family Ties” star Michael J. Fox will pay tribute to Goldberg, the show’s exec producer. “All in the Family” co-star Rob Reiner will honor Stapleton, Jane Lynch of “Glee” will remember Monteith and Robin Williams will be the one for his former “Mork and Mindy” mate Winters. “The In Memoriam is a very emotional and evocative segment for the Emmys, or any annual awards program,” said Primetime Emmys exec producer Ken Ehrlich. “These five individuals brought us such great entertainment and joy, so having their close friends share personal remembrances is something that will be very meaningful for television audiences across the country and across the generations. “And, our traditional In Memoriam segment will be presented in a unique new format that will give added importance to an already much anticipated segment of the Emmy show.” Ehrlich was one of the first producers to enhance the In Memoriam feature when he added a live musical component during the Grammys 10 years ago. Following the traditional remembrance segment, he produced a live performance of The Clash’s “London Calling” with Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Dave Grohl and others in tribute to Joe Strummer, who died earlier that year. At the Sept. 15 Creative Arts Emmy ceremony, the following were honored in the In Memoriam segment, in addition to Stapleton and Winters: Leslie Frankehiemer, Grady Hunt, Billy Barnes, David Ellis, Malachi Throne, Fran Bascom, Dann Cahn, Don Payne, Stanley Karnow, Nicole De Francesco, Norval D. Crutcher, Mike Vendrell, Eileen Brennan, Carl Young, Paul Samaras, Tim Samaras, Gerry Anderson, Rosemary Welden, Barry L. Gold, Andy Williams, William Cartwright, Charles Lisanby, Hector R. Figueroa, Frank Comstock, Charles L. Campbell, Lucille Bliss, Adam Strange, Bruce Solberg, Jim Mees, Bonnie Allen, Frank Morriss, Ken Johnson, Darren Rydstrom, Jim Gross, Fred Waugh, Bret T. Mardock, Robert Linden, Charles Durning and Ray Dolby. Dolby then received a special tribute from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. At last year’s Emmys, Andy Griffith received an extended tribute from the Academy. |

That's great. I think all of them deserve it but what about Larry Hagman?

Larry Hagman deserves more of a tribute than Jonathan Winters.

I shouldn't be surprised. Larry was practically ignored by the Emmys when he was alive. Why should now be any different.
Gandolfini, Stapleton, Winters and Goldberg absolutely deserve it. My objection would probably be for Monteith. It was a tragedy what happened to him and I understand why he's getting a tribute. but his contribution to television is so much less than the others and Larry was a tv icon. |

What exactly did Jonathan Winters do? Mork & Mindy jumped the shark when he joined the cast as the "baby" but he must have been on something else.

And where is Conrad Bain? All I remember Jonathan Winters for is the narrator on Frosty Returns. Most of his stuff is from way before my time.

These are a few of the ones that should be honored this year including those that passed on late in 2012.
2012: Harry Carey Jr Charles Durning Jack Klugman Cliff Osmond Don Medford Reinhold Weege Larry Hagman Deborah Raffin Gary Collins Alex Karras Lance LeGault 2013: Lee Thompson Young Lisa Robin Kelly Dennis Farina Eileen Brennan Annette Funicello Michael Ansara Conrad Bain Bonnie Franklin Dennis Burkley Steve Forrest Allan Arbus Dale Robertson Malachi Throne Joe Conley Richard Matheson Frank Bank Ned Wertimer Lou Myers Henry Polic II I'm reasonably sure that some of these won't get mentioned. |

I'm fine with Monteith being in the regular In Memorian segment, but no way should he get one of the separate special tribute segments. He doesn't have anywhere near the body of work to deserve such special recognition.
I'd say that Larry Hagman, Charles Durning, and Eileen Brennan are far worthier candidates for a special segment than Monteith. My guess is that it's an attempt by the producers to get the coveted younger demographic that doesn't generally watch these kinds of awards shows. Now if this was the Teen Nick awards then, yeah, let Monteith have a special segment. But for the Emmys, such special tributes should go to those who have stood the test of time. At least the other 4 picks made sense. |
