Default the chief of police used a belt on his kids and abused them?

Shouldn't the police be the ones who are guarding against child abuse? The Chief used a belt on his kids. A belt hurts like hell!! It is one of the worst things to get hit with. Why would the chief of police do this? Wouldn't a belt have been illegal anyway? I wonder what the Chief did when he got a call reporting child abuse. He probably went over to the parent's house and told them they did the right thing because he does the same to his kids. When the Chief did hit his kids, how many times do you think he hit them? Do you think it was really hard? Just a couple of cracks with a belt on your ass is enough to bring tears. Plus, he slapped them too. And he slapped hard. Probably hit with the belt even harder. No wonder Sam ran for her life and stole the squad car. So mean!!

Although I do not condone the chief using his belt to discipline his children, I think you have to understand that he had had a very hard life and was under a lot of pressure. Especially since his wife died. He would only take off his belt under very extreme circumstances. He would usually try to reason with his daughters before resorting to such drastic action.

It's different times now. I knew a lot of kids who had the belt used on them. It was not considered abuse back then. The Chief came from the old school of parenting. I'm not condoning it but that's the way it was. ..like getting paddled in school.

But I just can't believe that a police chief would do this when he is supposed to be upholding the laws in the community. He didn't care who knew either. Right in front of Simpson, the Chief told Samantha he was taking off his belt. Why did he feel like it was necessary to hit her with a belt on that occasion?

I think that the implication was the hearing her use the word ****** bothered him to the point that he did not know what else he could do.

First, as someone else mentioned, we live in different times and as I recall back then you were still able to discipline your child with a spanking. He probably "spanked" them where as child abusers "whip" their kids. Big difference! Yes, it hurts but I was lucky enough to have learned the first and only time I got it with a strap. I disobeyed my dad, I got a spanking with the strap, I learned and we moved on. Contrary to what others believe, spankings do work.

Whether you call it "spank" or "whip", he was still hitting them with his belt. How is that not abuse? What is the difference?

I think even a spank is abuse. The chief could have gotten through to his daughters another way if only he took the time.

Yeah, even if he only gave them a few cracks across the ass with his belt, that still would hurt like the devil!

There is a difference between discipline & abuse.

Spanking is discipline NOT child abuse (unless it's taken too far).

A spanking is still inflicting pain.

He told Samantha that she was going to get the spanking of her life so I wonder what that meant? He obviously intended on inflicting *enormous* pain!

I've got that type of corporal punishment in my childhood...and this was the mid-90's!

And I have a belt that's NOT just one strand of leather, it's like yarn and it may be even more painful than just a solid belt!
