I think it's terrible. They did not have to shoot that man. He was obviously having some sort of a breakdown. They could have talked him down and waited him out. He wasn't going anywhere. Throw in one of those smoke cannisters that doesn't kill, but overtakes a person. He didn't have to die.

He was about 6 years old when the Titanic sunk.

Seriously, You are RIGHT. He did NOT have to die. He wasn't going anywhere. They could have waited until he fell asleep by keeping a few officers on guard outside the door around the clock and in shifts. They COULD have waited it out. But no....these are police and police demand, I mean demand compliance upon their order. Period.

He could of just been cranky because he needed his nap, no cause to blow him away like that.

The shooting was justified here. You can't predict the actions of an unstable person w/ a firearm.

The officers tried negotiating and throwing in gas to clear the room, but the attempts failed. Deadly force was used only when the old man started to fire at the officers. They had to protect themselves and the people in the residence.

My mistake, thanks.

He still opened fire at the officers.

He fired shots at them. What were they supposed to do, let him
possibly wound or kill an officer? I am sorry the old man is dead,
but you shoot at police officers, you are likely to be shot back. I
happen to agree with JamesG on this one.

Lee, why did you quote Janice twice? Everyone is entited to their opinion and just because you don't agree with her you don't have to single her out. You have done that before in threads where a handful of people had the sampe opinion including Janice, yet you quote her, but not the others. Why?

Did 107-Year-Old Have to Die in Gun Standoff?
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. September 10, 2013 (AP)
By JEANNIE NUSS Associated Press
Associated Press

A police officer involved in a weekend standoff that left a 107-year-old Arkansas man dead has been placed on paid leave, authorities said Tuesday.

Pine Bluff Police Sgt. David DeFoor said the officer was placed on administrative leave immediately after he shot at Monroe Isadore, who opened fire on authorities.

"That is department policy when there's an officer-involved shooting that they're put on admin leave until the investigation is completed," DeFoor said.

Police would not identify the officer, who has not been charged with any wrongdoing. DeFoor said he believed the officer placed on leave was the only one who fired at Isadore.

Authorities have said they tried using a camera, negotiating tactics, and gas before shooting Isadore. But that hasn't answered questions from residents in Pine Bluff, a community of about 50,000 people some 45 miles southeast of Little Rock. Some are struggling to make sense of how someone known as a pleasant, churchgoing man who was hard of hearing and sometimes used a cane could die in such an explosive confrontation.

The fatal shooting happened Saturday after police said they were called to a domestic disturbance at the house where Isadore was staying.

Laurie Barlow, 48, of Lonoke, told officers she had gone to the house where Isadore was living temporarily to help him move to a new home, according to a police report. She said Isadore had previously been excited about the move but that when she arrived Isadore barricaded himself in a room.

"Ms. Barlow stated his granddaughter finally got him to open the door and she went around to speak with Mr. Isadore, at that time she stated Mr. Isadore raised his arm and pointed a gun at her and stated 'You better stop breaking in to my house,'" the report said.

After police moved Barlow and the granddaughter across the street, Isadore fired at a door moments after police tried to contact him. A SWAT team, called out when negotiations failed, maneuvered a camera into the house to see how Isadore was armed, then stormed inside after deploying gas and a distraction device, the report said. When Isadore fired, the entry team fired back.

It's not clear why authorities moved into the home when they did.

"I don't know what was going at the scene that would make them go ahead and go in," DeFoor said. "When shots are fired, it changes the whole idea of let's sit out here and wait."

Prosecutors are expected to review the case as early as this week.

Sounds like his mental state was deteriorating at the time of the incident.

It sounds like he didn't recognize his own granddaugther. It's very possible that he may have been suffering from Alzheimers Disease. With the state of mind he was in he couldn't have been thinking rationally. I think the officers should have realized that and not used deadly force.

Someone not thinking rationally who's in possession of a firearm is more reason to be cautious as you cannot predict what they will do.

The situation changed when he started firing at the officers. It's an unfortunate situation, but they had to protect themselves.
