Default 25 years ago; A Game of Answers, A Hot Spot and A Wipeout

Hey guys,

25 years ago this fall

We were introduced to one of the most popular, but short-lived exciting Game Show of the 80's

It's called WIPEOUT

Wipeout was a Game Show that aired on syndication during the 88/89 Season from September 12, 1988 to June 9, 1989 and it was hosted by the late Peter Tomarken of Press Your Luck Fame (who also served as Supervising Producer) while Rob Dames and Bob Fraser served as Executive Producers and John served as the announcer along with Jim Hackett and Bob Ridgely

Three contestants compete for cash and prizes as well as earn a shot @ a Brand New Car, but you have to avoid the Wipeout

First round

Three contestants were presented with a category and a board of 16 screens.

11 correct answers have the $ and five incorrect answers have wipeouts.

The contestant farthest to the left chose an answer and, if it was correct, earned money and kept control of the game. However, if the contestant selected a Wipeout, the contestant lost the money accumulated to that point and control passed to the next player in line. After a correct answer, a contestant could choose another answer or pass control to the next player. Contestants were required to select at least one answer before passing control.

$25 was awarded for the first correct answer, plus an additional $25 for every subsequent correct answer revealed (up to $275 for the eleventh correct answer). The round continued until either all 11 correct answers or all five Wipeouts had been found

The most money a contestant can earn is $1650 if they go all the way

Behind one of the correct answers was a Hot Spot. Finding the Hot Spot awarded a trip or other bonus prize to the contestant. However, in order to win the prize, a contestant must avoid selecting a Wipeout and be one of the two players advancing to round two. If the contestant found a Wipeout while holding the Hot Spot, the Hot Spot was placed behind one of the remaining correct answers

Ending the Round

After the first round, the two highest-scoring players kept their money and advanced to round two. In the event of a tie for second place, a sudden-death tiebreaker board presented with 12 answers, eight correct and four Wipeouts. A coin flip determined which player selected first. The players alternated choosing answers until one found either a Wipeout (and lost) or the eighth correct answer (and won). The survivor advanced to round two

Challenge Round

In the Challenge Round, a board with twelve answers was shown to the contestants, containing eight correct answers and four Wipeouts. Players alternated bidding based on the number of correct answers they could find. Bidding continued until one player challenged another or until the maximum bid of eight correct answers was given. If the player with the higher bid was able to complete the contract, they won the round. If a Wipeout was revealed, the other player could win the board by coming up with one of the remaining correct answers. However, if another Wipeout was uncovered, control passed back to the highest bidder who resumed where he/she had left off prior to uncovering the first Wipeout

The first player to win 2 out of 3 boards wins the game, a prize, and advanced to the bonus round

Bonus Round

The contestant was given a category and was shown a new board with twelve answers, each on their own monitor. In most versions, six of the twelve answers were correct. The player had to race to the monitors, touch the border around the monitors that he or she thought had the correct answers, then race back and hit a plunger. Upon hitting the plunger, the number of correct answers was revealed, and if it was less than six the player had to race back to the board and make changes. If the contestant found all six correct monitors lit in 60 seconds or less, they won a new car.
Originally, there were no returning champions; later, contestants stayed on the show until they were defeated or won the bonus round, whichever came first

Wipeout was also had different versions in 3 European Countries in the UK, Spain and Germany as well as in Australia

A computer game was released for the Commodore 64 by Sharedata in 1989

Peter David Tomarken was one of the most recognized faces in Game Shows

During the 1980's, prior to Wipeout, Peter hosted 3 Game Shows for 3 Major Networks:

He hosted his 1st Game Show Hitman for NBC Daytime, Bargain Hunters for abc Daytime in which Peter called the show a piece of trash, but his biggest claim to fame was hosting the Game Show Press Your Luck for CBS Daytime from 1983-1986

During the 90's, he appeared on Game Show Network hosting the Interactive Game Show Prime Games, which featured Decades and Race for the Numbers. He also appeared on several infomercials and acted in small roles, including on the TV show Ally McBeal, during that time. He semi-retired from television to work as a real estate agent. Tomarken hosted a documentary for GSN, Big Bucks: The Press Your Luck Scandal (which focused on winner Michael Larson), in March 2003.

as part of the special, he hosted a segment of Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck which reunited the two contestants who competed against Michael Larson with Larson's brother, James, for a grudge match (Michael Larson had died in February 1999 of throat cancer).

Sadly, on March 13, 2006, Peter Tomarken and his wife Kathleen, were killed in a Plane Crash in Santa Monica, CA

Peter and his wife are buried in the same plot at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, CA

Peter Tomarken was 63

John Harlan served as an announcer for many Game Shows like Name That Tune w/Tom Kennedy and Jim Lange, TattleTales, Password 70's style on abc, 50 Grand Slam, Celebrity Sweepstakes, All-Star Blitz, Press Your Luck, Face the Music w/Ron Ely and The Original American Gladiators w/Mike Adamle

The set to Wipeout was designed by Anthony Sabatino who also designed the set to Bruce Forsyth Hot Streak and Soul Train

Music was composed by Otis Connor

Winner's Shoes were provided by Kaepa, Inc.

The series was taped @ Paramount Studios the home to Gunsmoke, Happy Days, Family Ties, Soul Train, Entertainment Tonight, The Original Arsenio Hall Show among others

Wipeout was produced by Dames-Fraser Productions in association with Paramount Domestic Television A Gulf+Western Company

Reruns of Wipeout have bee seen on the USA Network from 1989-1991

Happy 25 to Wipeout
