Default 30 years ago this fall; One Day at a Time began it's 9th and Final Season

Hey guys,

30 years ago this fall

One Day at a Time Starring the late Bonnie Franklin, Pat Harrington and Valerie Bertinelli returned for its 9th and Final Season on CBS

and joining them once again are Boyd Gaines as Mark Royer, Michael Lembeck of Foley Square as Max Horvath and Nanette Fabray as Grandma Katherine Romano

also, joining the cast of One Day at a Time is Howard Hesseman better known as Dr. Johnny Fever on WKRP in Cincinnati as Sam Royer

The series which was a Top 20 Show for the 1st 8 Seasons didn't do too well in the 9th Season as the show dropped to #47

also, according to a source, CBS wanted to renew One Day at a Time for 2 more seasons giving them a total of 11 Seasons, but Series Star Bonnie Franklin decided to call it quits after the 83/84 Season

and now, here it is:

The Opening to the Final Season of One Day at a Time

Check it out!

Any family sitcom should end once the kids become adults

I never knew Howard Hessman and Nannete Fabray were on that show!

Also, why did Barbara have a different last name that season? Did she get married?

Yes, she married Boyd Gaines' character Mark, I guess the crew decided to change her last name to her married name

Pat Harrington guest starred on Hot in Cleveland. Michael Lembeck should too to see Valerie.

He directed their pilot episode, but that was his only involvement. (However, Bonnie Franklin and Mackenzie Phillips also guest starred.)

The name change came with the marriage in season 8.

The Drop in ratings clearly can be put down to two things - the timeslot switch and the network "giving up" on a show that wasn't returning. If went into this season effectively canceled. It would be interesting to see the type of Data we have today - nightly by half-hour demographic and viewership - perhaps the #47 isn't as actuate as we have been led to believe. (Lop-sided post-timeslot move perhaps)

As for the CBS wanting a 2-season renewal offered in 1984 - Seasons #10 & #11 - I find it odd that they'd hold onto the show with ratings going down.

I'd say it was perhaps actually seasons 9 and 10 the offer was for, with MASH the #1 sitcom ending in Early 1983 CBS would want to hold onto their 2nd most popular sitcom - ODAT as long as possible, this the 2-season offer.

Unless someone can site contemporary accounts dates wise.

Either way, with the show doing killer in syndication from Fall 1982 EMBASSY might have offered a sweet deal to CBS in Licencing fees (Lower fees to make the show more attractive to keep on) to make try to make a 2-season deal work - those were VERY Unusual in the 1970's-1980's.
