Eek Miley Cyrus Gets Social Media and Digital Boost from Controversial VMAs Performance

Miley Cyrus Sees Social Media and Digital Sales Benefits from MTV VMAs Performance
8/26/2013
by Keith Caulfield, Billboard

Miley Cyrus is reaping the benefits of her buzzed-about performance on the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 25 -- both in sales and social metrics.

During the VMAs telecast, Cyrus performed her Billboard Hot 100 top 10 single 'We Can't Stop', then participated in a medley of Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' and 'Give It 2 U' (with 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar).

Her performance came a little more than 24 hours after her forthcoming album, 'Bangerz', became available for pre-order on iTunes. At press time, the set ranked at No. 5 on the digital retailer's top sellers tally.

'Bangerz' is set for release on Oct. 8 through RCA Records.

Industry sources say that Cyrus' 'We Can't Stop' will likely see a slight dip in download sales for the week ending Aug. 25 but will perk up the following week. (In the week ending Aug. 18, it sold 148,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.) The song may generate a gain of 10 to 20 percent in the frame that ends Sept. 1.

Because the single itself is fairly old (it premiered in June), there is more focus on Cyrus' new song, 'Wrecking Ball'. The cut premiered on iTunes late Saturday night as part of the 'Bangerz' pre-order and is off to a robust sales start. Sources suggest that it moved between 80,000 and 90,000 copies in less than two full days on sale.

Thus, Cyrus will likely end up with two songs in the Top 20 on this week's Digital Songs chart, which will be released on Aug. 28 and reflects the sales week that ended Aug. 25.

The full sales impact of the show will not be felt until next week, after a complete week of post-VMA sales (for the week ending Sept. 1).

According to Twitter, the 'We Can't Stop' and 'Blurred Lines' medley garnered 306,100 tweets per minute during the East Coast airing of the show. To compare, last year's VMAs had a peak of 98,307 tweets per minute, whereas presidential election night in 2012 saw a tweets-per-minute peak of 327,452.

The conclusion of Justin Timberlake's performance on the show was the second-most-tweeted moment of the VMAs: 219,800 tweets per minute.

According to Next Big Sound, Cyrus earned 50,000 new Facebook page likes on Sunday -- up tremendously from the 30,000 she tallied on Saturday. Comparably, Timberlake's Facebook logged 122,000 new page likes on Sunday -- close to five times the number of likes he earned on Saturday.

The two-and-a-half-hour VMAs telecast averaged 10.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen -- a 66 percent gain from last year's draw of 6.1 million. The most-watched VMAs telecast remains 2011's installment, which delivered 12.4 million viewers.

Always impressive how many like Cyrus have employed their show business talents into nearly diabolical efforts to manipulate at least the American media in accordance with their public relations agendas.I say "near diabolical" because just think what the end results of many of these campaigns have been.Mind control.Their simple taking advantage of some people's tendencies towards vicarious existences through people so celebrated in our society they're perceived as deities here to provide some sort of path to glory and enlightenment.Cyrus has officially proven great success in this endeavor just as Britney Spears and Madonna before her.All hail the new queen of music industry hoopla!!

Why THR thinks this is news is something I'll never understand.

This boost in her record sales is not surprising. SEX SELLS. Even simulated sex sells. Expect to see more of the former Disney Moppets perform raunchy, but rewarding acts of faux-fornication in their stage acts.

She's nasty. I feel like I need a shower after watching just a few minutes of that. That white tongue, ugh. If she's going to do that, at least have a pink tongue.

If she thinks that performance was sexy, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell her.

Can we really call that a performance? Anyone out of a sleazy nightclub could have pulled that off. What happened to choreography? She could take a few lessons from Justin Timberlake; his performance, great as usual.

Her performance wasn't offensive, it was downright sad. The fact that she and and her handlers think she's sexy is what's offensive. She looked ridiculous. Sticking out one's tongue and molesting yourself is not an attractive look for her. Girl, have a seat and rethink your career path.

Reportedly, the rehearsal was not as raunchy and over-the-top as the finished result, which from what I've heard is pretty common at the VMA's. She knew what she was doing, the girl is an attention seeker and wants so badly to be treated as an adult and to put her Hannah Montana past behind her.

Oh No

Don't you miss the days when rock and roll music shook up the world than all these little pop tarts?

Oh No

All I know is - I will never see a foam finger at a sporting event again the same way.

Oh, I totally agree. Heck, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart are in their late 50s/early 60s and STILL rock. Same goes for Carole King, who is in her 70s. Linda Ronstadt probably could, too, had she not lost her voice.

Miley Cyrus Responds to VMAs Backlash
Sep 3, 2013
by Sadie Gennis

Miley Cyrus has broken her silence about her controversial Video Music Awards performance, in which she asserted her adulthood by motor-boating a backup dancer's butt, simulating sex with a foam finger and twerking on Robin Thicke.

"I don't pay attention to the negative," Cyrus told MTV, adding that she isn't the first to cause scandal on the VMAs stage.

"Madonna's done it. Britney's [Spears] done it. Anyone that performs, that's what you're looking for. You're wanting to make history. Me and Robin, the whole time were like, 'We're about to make history right now.'"

As for the fact that people can't seem to stop discussing her performance, which has inspired divisive cultural critiques about race and gender, Cyrus insists:

"They're overthinking it. You're thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it, because that's just me."
