Default Jonathan was an annoying dork!

Why did they pair Julie up with this nerd? He added nothing to the show. Maybe he was the extra body to replace the chief. And the chief was definitely missed. I watched these post-chief episodes when the show originally aired, they were ok then. Now looking back and observing the show, these episodes stink, didn't realize he was that important to the show.

I think that the main motive of the network was to build a pregnancy into the story. In order to do this, they had to pair one of the girls with somebody. This is where we came to Julie and Jonathan.

Well Katy was the attractive one who all the guys wanted. But I guess Julie was the one who would most likely settle down. But the writers could have found a better dude for Julie than clumsy goofball Jonathan

True, but the writers could have paired her with a professional, successful man who WASN'T a dorky nerd like Jonathan.

Ahhh!! NO!!! I like Jonathan! I think he's adorable! His goofiness was charming! A real serious, professional type guy wouldn't have been any fun for the show! I think he was a good addition and I think he and Julie had good chemistry!

I agree with the OP. Jonathan added nothing to the show. Neither did the Chief. And neither did Julie ESPECIALLY. I always hated Julie, I know that's a bit strong but that's how I feel! And I don't buy that Julie, the geek, would've gotten married before much prettier sister Katie? I don't buy it. Crappy writing all around!

Because of Julie's personality, I would much prefer her over Katie. However, I will give Katie the fact that, if Julie turned me down, she would be able to pick me up on the rebound.

Agreed. He was a terrible addition and added nothing to show. His whole goofy klutz schtick was so forced and unfunny.

Gimme a Break was just so terrible in general and I don't understand what people like about it besides Nell Carter who was a good singer, terrible actress in GAB. Other shows that ran on the same night like The Facts of Life, Diff'rent Strokes and Silver Spoons were a lot better than this trainwreck. And the drama that ensued was so poorly written and I just can't stand the show. I can't think of anything good to say about it. I hate it, and I know that's a strong word but I strongly hate Gimme a Break. I didn't think I would, but I do. Joanie Loves Chachi looks like a masterpiece when compared to this trash. But if you guys like this show, good for you, it's just my opinion.

...Wow, that was a long rant. Sorry about it being so long.

No! He was very natural ! That is his genre of acting. If you ever have seen Jonathan in other roles he is a really good comedic actor. A good looking guy that is funny too is a great combination!

Maybe he was OK in other roles , but I have to go with the OP. Pointless character, bad actor, in a terrible sitcom.
