Movie Reviews: The World's End
Opening in only about 1,500 theaters, the British comedy The World's End is getting the same sort of overwhelmingly ecstatic reviews that director Edgar Wright's previous films, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, did. Joe Morgenstern writes in the Wall Street Journal: "like those two films, this one amounts to high end nonsense." Steven Rea in the Philadelphia Inquirer has the same reaction. "This inspired nutball comedy is like its heroes on their mission: It just gets progressively more nuts, more blotto." A.O. Scott in the New York Times concludes that director Wright keeps all forms of seriousness at bay. "His project is childish fun with adult language and grown-up costumes, and he executes it with energy and precision." But Kyle Smith in the New York Post concludes: "The filmmakers wind up wasting the audience's time trying to cover up the lameness of their jokes with the loudness of their effects." Claudia Puig in USA Today simply dismisses it as: "a sometimes chaotic and uneven comedy." -IMDb News |
