Default Flashback/The Emergency

I think I found another inconsistency with Gimme A Break. In the Emergency episode, Katie is rushed to the hospital because she is having a problem with her IUD birth control. It is revealed that the mom (Margaret) arranged for Katie to be fitted for an IUD because she knew Katie was promiscuous. Yet, in the Flashback episode where Margaret tells Nell that she is dying, Katie is only eight years old. So I'm wondering, why would Margaret be talking to Katie about birth control at age eight? Did she really have her eight year old daughter fitted for an IUD at such a young age?

Good point. I never knew how long Nell was supposed to have been with the girls. I hate inconsistencies and continuity problems in shows. I know writers change, but they should take the time to make sure their story is consistent with what has already been told. Of course, here's a thought, perhaps Margaret survived her initial bout with cancer only to have it return years later, at which point Katie would have been older. If we want consistency, I guess we have to make that be the case. On a side note, is there any Gimme a Break! fanfiction anywhere? I'd love to find some good fanfiction to fill in some of the gaps. I might even write some stories myself!

Two days ago, I responded to a different thread that also had to do with inconsistencies. In it I stated that, according to my experiences, the show that is the most notorious for inconsistencies is the "Flintstones" followed by the "Golden Girls". Other shows that I have caught continuity errors include, Gilligan's Island, Three's Company and All in the Family. Some specialists will say that the fact that I look at these inconsistencies as worth pointing out or even worth thinking about is part of my disability and one of the reasons that I have been in special ed. from third grade all the way through college. Such is life!

So did you notice that Katie was only eight in Flashback, but about 16 or 17in The Emergency? You didn't say.

Yes, I did, by all means, notice that absence of logic in that situation. Sorry for not making myself clear.

That's OK. Are we to assume that Margaret had the sex talk with Katie at age eight? And are we to assume that she dragged Katie down to the gynecologist also at age eight?

That sounds pretty far-fetched to me! However, I feel pretty confident that you are asking me as a joke.

The sex talk at age 8 is very possible because kids start asking questions earlier all the time, but I doubt she had her fitted for that birth control thing at age 8 - unless of course Katie started showing signs of being the sex manic at that age, which I highly doubt.

The writers were very inconsistent and lazy. No eight year old girl gets fitted for an I.U.D.

I see what you mean. In the first year, it was strongly implied that the girls' mother had been dead for less than a year. However, as the seasons progressed, it was implied that her death was far enough into the past so that Samantha hardly remembers her. However, I have caught inconsistencies like that in a lot of shows. Especially shows that go on for a lot of seasons. According to my experiences, two of the biggest offenders are the "Flintstones" and the "Golden Girls". If anyone would like to read about examples of any of these situations, I will be happy to elaborate.

Earlier today, I started a thread called "More Red Tape". It was through an announcement about the first-season episode the "Emergency" that I learned what red tape was. I explained this situation in the thread itself. That thread now has twenty-seven views and zero replies. Just for fun, I have decided to bring a thread pertaining to the same episode to the top of the page. See you around!

Just in case you do not know, red tape is a terms used to explain the formalities you have to go through to achieve your goal. That goal could be anything from getting admitted into a hospital, buying a gun or obtaining and hunting or fishing licence. Just in case you are interested, the "Brady Bunch" episode called "Sorry Right Number" has been uploaded onto You Tube. In this episode, Mr. Brady tells Mrs. Brady about all of the red tape that he had to go through to get a pay phone installed in his house. Well, if you can think back to the "Emergency" you will remember when Nell first bring's Katie the the hospital. The cranky nurse gave Nell a stack of very complicated forms for her to fill out before Katie can even get examined. Before this episode came on the TV announcer said "Next on 'Gimme a Break!' Katie's in the hospital and Nell's hung up on red tape." A while back I posted a thread regarding this memory and it got no replies. I have since posted follow-up threads about other things that had to do with red tape. My initial thread about red tape has been pushed back I do not know how many pages! A good chunk of what has pushed it there has been further failed attempts by me to stimulate some conversation. My most recent thread on this topic had to do with the red tape that I had to go through to be able to post comments on You Tube videos. When that did not generate any replies, I brought this thread to the top of the page telling you guys about what I had written in the previous thread. The fact that you replied to it makes that undertaking a success!
