Sad Actress Karen Black 1939-2013

Link

Oscar nominatd actress Karen Black has died at 74.

Her husband, Stephen Eckelberry, confirmed the death on Facebook on Thursday. The actress, famous for her performances in "Five Easy Pieces" and "Easy Rider" and "Nashville," had cancer.

Black had the good fortune to arrive on the Hollywood scene as the old studio order was fading and a new one -- guided by a greater sense of permissiveness and narrative complexity -- took its place.

She was not conventionally attractive, but in age where a gap-toothed Lauren Hutton could become a supermodel and actors like Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman, whose ethnic looks would have doomed them to character roles, took their place as leading men, Black became a symbol of New Hollywood.

Her film credits overflow with films that captured the zeitgeist of the period and her on-screen persona -- slightly daffy, somewhat blue collar -- was melded by the likes of Robert Altman, John Schlesinger, and Bob Rafelson.

Among her most famous roles was the pregnant girlfriend of Jack Nicholson's character in "Five Easy Pieces," for which she would receive an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

I will always remember her as the stewardess in Airport 1975. Her sister, Gail Brown, played the character of Clarice on the now-defunct soap opera, Another World, from 1975-1986.

So sad to hear of Karen's passing. I always will think of her in 70s Gothic horror movies such as Burnt Offerings. She was so memorable in Dan Curtis' Trilogy of Terror as the woman being attacked by the sadistic Zuni fetish doll!

Sad Rest In Peace Karen Black

Wow, I loved her. Her eyes were so distinctive. There was no mistaking her for anybody else. The clip in Charles' post shows just how talented and versatile she was as an actress. What a shame; 74 seems young to me.

Another ex-castmember of "You're a Big Boy Now" is gone.

Did you know there was an indie rock band that was partially named after her?

i had read a while back that she was battling cancer. So I guess it was just a matter of time. She made a lot of movies in the 70's. My favorites were Easy Rider and Trilogy Of Terror. Rest in peace Karen

Here are some screen shots of Karen in Easy Rider, Trilogy Of Terror and Airport '75.

I own all three dvd's. Love these films! I highly recommend these films to those of you who aren't familiar with Karen's work.
