Michael Ansara, best known for playing the Klingon commander Kang on "Star Trek," has died at the age of 91.

Deadline reports that Ansara passed away at his home in Calabasas, California on Wednesday, July 31. Before his stint on "Star Trek," the Syrian-born actor appeared in a number of TV Westerns as well as movies like "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" and "The Greatest Story Ever Told." He also played a human fighting machine catapulted back in time from a future war in "Soldier," a classic 1964 "Outer Limits" episode penned by Harlan Ellison.

But most sci-fi fans will remember him as Kang from 1968's "Day of the Dove," one of the best episodes of the third and final season of the original "Star Trek." In the show, Kang and a battalion of Klingon warriors are transported aboard the Enterprise by an alien entity that sets the ship's crew and the Klingons against each other so it can feed off their hatred. Ansara reprised the role in a 1994 episode of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and a 1996 segment of "Star Trek: Voyager."

His other well-known genre credit was voicing Mr. Freeze in several animated Batman films and TV series, including "Batman: The Animated Series," "The New Batman Adventures" and "Batman Beyond." Other sci-fi, horror and superhero TV shows and movies to which he contributed included "Time Tunnel" (1966), "It's Alive" (1974), "The Manitou" (1978), "Dr. Strange" (1978), "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" (1979), the animated series "Rambo" (1986) and "Babylon 5" (1994).

Ansara was married three times, most notably for 16 years to "I Dream of Jeannie" star Barbara Eden from 1958 to 1974.
