Cool Shirley Jones Doesn't Mind that "The Partridge Family" Ruined her Career

Shirley Jones Doesn't Mind that "The Partridge Family" Ruined her Career (VIDEO)
7/25/2013

"The Partridge Family" ruined Shirley Jones' career, but she's not complaining.

A film veteran with roles in hits such as Oklahoma! and The Music Man, Jones said she was warned about taking on a TV role in the 1970s family series.

"Everybody told me don't do a television series because if you are that character you'll be the character for the rest of your life and your movie career will be in the toilet," Jones told Katie Couric on "Katie". "They were right!"

Jones is currently promoting her memoir and said she was happy to have played Shirley Partridge on "The Partridge Family" because it allowed her to spend more time with her kids.

It is a joke. Most women who are over 35 have their movie careers dry up anyway. She doesn't have the range that Shirley MacLaine has. I wish she would just admit the fact that the movies quit her. She didn't quit the movies.

Shirley Jones is a talented beautiful lady and she was great in the Partridge Family. I've seen her on other TV shows from time to time. IMHO she's a fine actress; look at the great job she did with Lulu in Elmer Gantry. You can give me Shirley in anything anytime! Shirley Jones = Surely talented!

I think that a big reason for Shirley's decline was that Hollywood stopped making (or slowed down the production) of the wholesome/sweet/musicial movies she excelled at. She may have been able to stay in films longer if she would have taken smaller character roles, but maybe she prefers being the lead.

Anyway, she's awesome!

Her career seems to be on the rebound playing characters opposite of her Partridge character. She's great.

I don't think she is on the rebound at all. After the Partridge Family she went back to live performing. Now her voice is shot. She is hoarse and coughs a lot. It is embarrassing that she still want to sing. It is like someone should tell her. Now she is putting out some bad written book that is obviously made to make a cheap buck. It is like how low can you go.

She is still beautiful and I hope she goes on and never stops.

I think Shirley is mainly working because she has money problems. Lets face it. Marty Ingels probably spends all her money because he never had any reliable talent. At least Jack had his own career and yes he had the type of talent that would have always kept him busy.
I would like to see her do quality stuff. I am glad her son Patrick finds ways to keep her involved in the theater and fund raising.

If Shirley had not have married Jack Cassidy after Carousel I doubt whether we would have heard from her again.

I just don't think that after the Partridge Family that Shirley had the type of talent other sitcom stars have had like John Travolta and Alan Alda had.

She had a pretty successful movie career BEFORE The Partridge Family not to mention winning an Oscar. I would hardly say her movie career was "ruined", If anything it was over by 1970.

You obviously have the same completely negative and biased attitude toward Jones as you do toward David Cassidy. Did they do something to you personally to make you so bitter towards them?

How would you know that she "coughs a lot"?? How do you know the book is "bad written"? For someone who doesn't like her, you sure seem to follow her closely...

Shirley won an Oscar for playing against type for Elmer Gantry. If they would have gotten Piper Laurie to play the part like they wanted to Piper could have played that part with one hand behide her back. With the exception of Courtship of Eddie's Father' which by no means was a challenging role, the other movies were forgettable. Shirley's movie career was going south anyway as they do for most women over a certain age. Shirley just smacks of arrogance when she says the Partridge Family ruined her movie career and she did it for the paycheck. David acts the same way. Danny Bonaduce is the only one who is thankful to the show.

I guess people here are not reading the other comments online. Sorry I am hard on people. I am seeing reviews on AMAZON that said this book was a complete waste of time and money. There are a few fans of hers that would give anything she does a 5 star.
