Movie Lifetime's "Petals on the Wind" Scores 3.4 Million Viewers

Heather Graham, Ellen Burstyn To Star in Lifetime's "Flowers in the Attic"
July 23, 2013

Lifetime is officially moving forward on its movie adaptation of the dark V.C. Andrews novel, Flowers in the Attic, TheWrap has learned.

Heather Graham (Boogie Nights, Drugstore Cowboy, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me) is set to play Corrine, the mother who abandons her four young children, leaving them with their truly messed up grandmother, Olivia, who, wait for it, will be played by Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy winner Ellen Burstyn ("Political Animals," Requiem for a Dream).

Kayla Alpert ("Up All Night") will write the film, which will be directed by Deborah Chow (The High Cost of Living).

Produced by Front Street Pictures, Inc., Merideth Finn (The Rite) will executive produce with Cue the Dog Productions' Michele Weiss (Little Children) and Charles W. Fries (Screamers). Harvey Kahn (Lifetime’s Stalkers, Romeo Killer: The Chris Porco Story) will produce.

Airdate is still to be determined.

Flowers in the Attic was first published in 1979 and it went on to sell more than 40 million copies worldwide. Readers were captivated by its tale of four children who are forced to live their formative years locked in an attic and made to pay for their parents' sins by their cruel religious grandmother. It spawned four more novels in the series.

Flowers in the Attic was previously adapted for the big screen in 1987 and enjoyed a good amount of box office success, though critics panned it. It starred Kristy Swanson as oldest daughter Cathy, Victoria Tennant as mother Corrine and Louise Fletcher as grandmother Olivia.

The project represents Lifetime's continued push beyond its ripped-from-the-headlines and biopic movie programming. Last week, the effort was rewarded with a supporting actress Emmy nomination for Alfre Woodard in its adaptation of Steel Magnolias.

Kiernan Shipka and Mason Dye Join Flowers in the Attic
by NELLIE ANDREEVA
Wednesday August 14, 2013

"Mad Men‘s" Kiernan Shipka and Mason Dye have booked young leads in Lifetime‘s original movie Flowers in the Attic.

Based on V.C. Andrews’ controversial best-selling book, Flowers weaves the gothic tale of four young siblings, two boys and two girls, who, after the tragic death of their father, are subjected to cruel emotional and physical abuse resulting from a dark, long-hidden family secret.

Abandoned by their mother (Heather Graham) and forced to endure unimaginable treatment living in the attic of their grandparents’ mansion, the children form a family unit of their own. But as the oldest boy (Dye) and girl (Shipka) come of age emotionally and physically while caring for their younger brother and sister, their family’s sordid past entraps them further as they try to survive and escape from the harsh conditions in which they live.

Ellen Burstyn plays the children’s grandmother, Olivia.

Lifetime's Flowers in the Attic Adds "Orphan Black" Star as Heather Graham's Hubby
by Vlada Gelman
8/20/13

Lifetime’s upcoming adaptation of V.C. Andrews’ novel Flowers in the Attic is rounding out its cast with Orphan Black‘s Dylan Bruce, the actor revealed via Twitter on Tuesday.

"Excited to get started on Lifetime's #FlowersintheAttic! #bartwinslow"

Bruce will play Bartholomew “Bart” Winslow, the trophy husband of Corrine (Heather Graham), a recent widow who puts her four children into a pretty terrible situation at her parents’ mansion after their father’s death.

A disturbing family secret causes the children’s grandmother, Olivia (Ellen Burstyn), to lock the children in the attic, where the oldest boy (Mason Dye) and girl (Kiernan Shipka) develop an inappropriate bond.

Hope it's better than the 1987 film! To be fair, the subject matter is fairly difficult to bring to film!

Lifetime Developing Flowers in the Attic Sequel
1/9/14
by Philiana Ng

Lifetime is already planning to adapt the sequel to Flowers in the Attic, one week before the telepic will make its television debut Jan. 18.

The news was revealed Thursday afternoon by Rob Sharenow, executive vp and general manager of Lifetime during the winter Television Critics Association press tour.

Screenwriter Kayla Alpert has already begun scripting the sequel, revealing that the story takes place about 10 years after the events of Flowers in the Attic.

"It is a very, juicy compelling revenge drama," Alpert promised during the session.

When asked about the possibility of adapting the other follow-up novels in the Dollganger series, Alpert put the ball in Lifetime's court, saying that it is up to the network.

The controversial best-selling 1979 novel by V.C. Andrews, Flowers in the Attic, has sold 40 million copies worldwide and was followed by Petals on the Wind, published in 1980.

The 1980 novel Petals on the Wind covers five years and is a continuation of the first Dollganger novel.

Flowers in the Attic Earns Best Lifetime Ratings Since 2012
1/21/14

Ratings were in full bloom for Lifetime's Flowers in the Attic. Lifetime's adaptation of the V.C. Andrews slumber party must-read was a hit with viewers, bringing in 6.1 million for the Saturday (Jan. 18) premiere.

Flowers in the Attic garnered the best ratings for a Lifetime original movie since their version of Steel Magnolias, which aired in October 2012.

We're guessing that the sequel Petals on the Wind is a definite go now.

If you missed it, Lifetime is airing an encore presentation this weekend after the premiere of Lizzie Borden Took an Ax.

Flowers in the Attic Sequel Scoop
by James Hibberd
Jan 29, 2014

Two of Lifetime’s Flowers in the Attic stars have signed on for the sequel, but some of the Dollangangers will be played by doppelgangers.

First, those loving moms will return: Heather Graham and Ellen Burstyn have just closed deals to reprise their roles as Corrine Dollanganger and Olivia Foxworth, respectively, in Petals on the Wind.

We’re told Burstyn’s role will be smaller this time compared to the first film.

Both actresses were expected and certainly hoped-for by fans to appear in the sequel, yet their return did not seem fully certain given producers’ plans to take a different approach to adapting the second book in V.C. Andrews’ bestselling gothic-romance series.

While the 1980 Petals book picks up right after the events in Flowers, Lifetime’s movie will jump 10 years ahead.

Also, we hear Dylan Bruce (Bart Winslow) is expected to return. But as previously reported, the Dollanganger kids are currently being recast with older actors.

Flowers in the Attic Sequel: Sexy First Photos and Premiere Date -- EXCLUSIVE
by James Hibberd
Mar 27, 2014

Ready to see grown up Cathy and Christopher? Here are the first two character images from Lifetime’s Petals on the Wind, the sequel to ratings sensation Flowers in the Attic.

Plus, we can also exclusively reveal the film’s premiere date: Scrap your Memorial Day plans, because you’re going to watching Petals on the Wind Monday, May 26 at 9 p.m.

The film stars Rose McIver (Once Upon a Time) as Cathy Dollanganger and Wyatt Nash (Pretty Little Liars) as her brother/secret attic lover Christopher Dollanganger.

These two young-ish Flowers parts were recast because the sequel picks up a decade after the conclusion of the first film. Heather Graham also returns as their mother Corrine, while Cathy’s new boyfriend is played by Will Kemp (90210).

Ellen Burstyn and Dylan Bruce will also reprise their roles in the film as grandmother Olivia and Corrine’s husband Bart, respectively.

One photo shows a family portrait with a trio of blue-eyed Dollangangers decked out in swinging retro threads. Cathy in particular looks rather intense, doesn’t she?

Then there’s a photo of Cathy and her abusive dancer paramour Julian, a relationship that leads her to confront the forbidden romance she had with her brother in the first film.

Petals is based on the V.C. Andrews novel. The first film garnered 6.1 million viewers for Lifetime in its premiere.

Lifetime’s Petals on the Wind Scores 3.4 Million Viewers
by THE DEADLINE TEAM
May 27, 2014

Lifetime’s Petals on the Wind, starring Heather Graham and Ellen Burstyn, delivered 3.4 million viewers Sunday night.

The film, based on the second gothic novel of V.C. Andrews’ iconic series about the Dollanganger family, averaged 1.5 million Adults 18-49 viewers (up 36% versus Lifetime’s year-to-date original movie average), 1.5 million Adults 25-54 viewers (up 15%), 1.3 million Women 25-54 viewers (up 39%) and 1.2 million Women 18-49 viewers (up 38%).

Petals was the sequel of Flowers in the Attic, which Lifetime telecast in January, attracting a much larger crowd of 6.1 million total viewers – the network’s best original movie performance since the premiere of Steel Magnolias drew 6.5 million viewers in October 2012.

Lifetime was already high on its adaptation of V.C. Andrews’ controversial 1979 book, announcing at TCA on January 9 that it had ordered the sequel, Petals on the Wind.

Flowers, starring Ellen Burstyn, Kiernan Shipka, Mason Dye and Heather Graham, scored 2.6 million viewers in the key 25-54 demo and 2 million among women 25-54. It also averaged 2.4 million adults 18-49 and 1.9 million women 18-49.

Andrews’ Flowers in the Attic was an instant hit when it was released in 1979, topping bestseller lists in just two weeks. After Lifetime’s January premiere of Flowers in the Attic, the novel quickly returned to the bestseller list after a 30-year absence.

To date, 106 million copies of V.C. Andrews’ books have been published in 95 countries.

Lifetime is developing three more V.C. Andrews books, including If There Be Thorns and Seeds of Yesterday, both from the Dollanganger series, and the standalone novel My Sweet Audrina.
