Sad Dennis Farina Dies at 69

Actor, Former Chicago Cop Dennis Farina Dies
July 22, 2013

Dennis Farina, a former Chicago police officer turned actor, has died, the Associated Press is reporting.

He was 69 years old.

Farina, who was born in Chicago on February 29, 1944, was best know for his role as detective Joe Fontana on NBC's "Law & Order". He was the only "Law & Order" cast member to have actually served in law enforcement.

According to IMDb, Farina starred in at least 75 movies or television series.

Update: Lori De Waal, his representative, says Farina died Monday morning in a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital after suffering a blood clot in his lung.

"Law & Order" Creator Dick Wolf "Stunned and Saddened" by Dennis Farina's Death
by Katie Atkinson
July 22, 2013

Dennis Farina, who died Monday at age 69, had a lot of jobs during his 30-plus years as an actor — from 1988′s Midnight Run to his stint as Nick’s dad on "New Girl" just last year.

But one of his most high-profile gigs was his two seasons as Det. Joe Fontana on NBC’s "Law & Order", taking over for the late Jerry Orbach.

The show’s creator and executive producer, Dick Wolf, sent a statement to EW following Farina’s death:

I was stunned and saddened to hear about Dennis’ unexpected passing this morning,” Wolf said in the statement. “The Law & Order family extends sympathy and condolences to his family. He was a great guy.

I was on another message board talking about Farina, and someone mistakingly thought he played Billy Batts on Goodfellas, which was played by Frank Vincent. An understandable mistake, since I thought for awhile that Farina played the role, probably because of the mustache.

Farina was the only Law and Order actor who was actually in law enforcement, being a detective in Chicago. His L and O character mentioned that he was a Chicago cop.

I didn't know he died. He was a good actor and I liked him on Law and Order. I don't know if ya'll remember he played on a 80's tv show called Crime Story. That's the first time I saw him. I wonder if that show is on dvd because I would like to see it again. I liked him in the movies Reindeer Games with Ben Affleck and Charlize Theron and Code Of Silence with Chuck Norris. I think he was also in Another Stakeout with Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez.

I remember Crime Story, it was produced by Michael Mann, producer of Miami Vice in association with New World Television

That show could've had a longer run, IMO

Yeah Crime Story was very good. I'm gonna check on Amazon.com to see if it's on dvd because I would like to see it again. Dennis was on a couple episodes of Miami Vice. It's funny you mentioned Michael Mann was the producer of Crime Story and since he was the producer of Miami Vice, that's probably why Dennis was on Miami Vice.

I know both seasons of crime Story were released on DVD a long time ago if you can find it.
