I'd love to trade for this movie not available commercially.
Bob Hope plays NYC mayor Jimmy Walker. BEAU JAMES color, 105 minutes Directed by Melville Shavelson, 1957. Starring: Bob Hope, Vera Miles, Paul Douglas, Alexis Smith, Darren McGavin, Joe Mantell, Sid Melton, George Jessel, Jack Benny, Jimmy Durante Thanks. The story of Jimmy Walker who became mayor of New York in the '20s. Used by professional politicians and money-grabbers, Walker himself was "stupid but clean", although his open affair with Betty Compton cost him dear. The film follows Walker from political obscurity to mayor during the Roaring Twenties with the help of Tammany Hall leaders. Walker never takes his job seriously, letting gangsters take big money while he enjoys the limelight and show biz crowd. But he redeems himself by testifying against the crooks. Lots of good songs from the 1920s and early 1930s. LEONARD MALTIN SAYS D: Melville Shavelson. Bob Hope, Vera Miles, Paul Douglas, Alexis Smith, Darren McGavin; narrated by Walter Winchell. Flavorful recreation of the political career of Mayor Jimmy Walker in 1920s N.Y.C., based on Gene Fowler's book. Hope is fine in basically noncomic performance. Guest appearances by Jimmy Durante, Jack Benny, George Jessel, Walter Catlett. VistaVision. |
