Emmys: Catholic League Condemns "American Horror Story" Nominations
7/18/2013 by Erin Carlson While the cast and crew of "American Horror Story: Asylum" bask in the glory of their 17 Emmy nominations, the president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights has issued a complaint, saying, "Once again, TV has sunk lower than we thought possible." In a statement posted Thursday on the Catholic League's website, Bill Donohue blasts the FX anthology series for its "anti-Catholic" narrative and also condemns both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety for declining to run an anti-Asylum ad by the group last fall, before the series' premiere. "This show, which leads the pack with 17 Emmy nominations, depicted a Catholic home for the criminally insane run by sadistic and libidinous nuns. The plot is sinister. Characters include a nymphomaniac, a lesbian, a degenerate bully, a serial killer and a doctor who enjoys torturing patients. What a bunch!" "Hollywood’s hatred of Catholicism is almost pathological. Indeed, it extends even to the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. What other group receives such treatment? Once again, TV has sunk lower than we ever thought possible. Talk about crazy!" The show dominated Thursday's Emmy nominations, reeling in noms for miniseries or movie as well as outstanding lead actress in a miniseries or movie for Jessica Lange. She won the supporting actress Emmy last year for the first season of American Horror Story. An FX rep did not immediately respond to THR's request for comment. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...merican-588536 |
