Was this how most parents were in the early 1980s? I wouldn't know because I am too young. Would the Chief's parenting style have been normal for the time period? He believed in spanking, even with a belt! If he had caught Samantha before she took off in the squad car, she wouldn't have sit down for a week. Nell talked him out of spanking her by the time they got to the police station. When I watch this show I feel like things were very different back then. Were they like this show? Did parents spank their kids a lot? The Chief was a loving father, but he was also no-nonsense. He didn't put up with any crap. Another question: Why would the Chief use a belt? Wouldn't his hand have been enough?

It was still common. A lot of kids I grew up with in the mid 1980s to early 1990s got hit by their parents. Around the mid 1990s, everyone I knew was not a little kid anymore, and nobody slapped their kids. But throughout the 1980s and early 1990s it still happened. |

Severe spanking wasn't universal back then, but it wasn't unheard of. |
