I think there's some big party going on. They have pizza and potato chips and Dr. Pepper and lots of other good stuff. They're playing all sorts of great music, like the Backstreet Boys. I don't think that what's going on is any of the options you provided. I don't think it's just a big coincidence, but I don't think it's aliens or Atlantis or whatever the other option was.

Heeeey! Maybe there is a temporal disturbance in the area that is causing ships and planes to go through time and they can't get back!
