"Hello, I'm Dobie Gillis, and I love girls - tall ones, short ones, blonde ones, dark ones, any kind of girl.." That about sums up the premise of the CBS series The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Based upon a series of short stories by humorist Max Shulman, the series starred Dwayne Hickman as Dobie Gillis, the boy next door, constantly out to get the girl of his dreams. Of course, every guy has a best friend, and Dobie's was Maynard G. Krebs, played by a pre-Gilligan Bob Denver.
The series went through many changes over the years. The first season followed Dobie as he was living at home with his parents while attending high school, although he was rarely seen at home. Rather, he was usually seen with his parents at the grocery store that they owned or at school. As the series progressed, he graduated from high school and went into the Army... but with it only being 1960, it wasn't quite the Vietnam-era Army just yet. After his very brief time (six whole months!) in the Army, he went on to college for the remaining two seasons (where his English teacher from high school just so happened to transfer to... wait, didn't that happen on Boy Meets World?). The series ran from 1959 until 1963 on CBS, and now it is available on DVD for the first time ever as a complete series release. Excellent review. It sounds like a great set. That's how all classic series should be treated.

I'll pick this up before the year's end but I can't afford it right now.

As Patty Lane would say "Cuckoo"
I already preordered this set and am happy to read that ALL the episodes are unedited and looked decent quality-wise. Should fit nicely with my Patty Duke Show, Dennis The Menace, Donna Reed Show, and That Girl sets. |

Awesome review! I have a ton of these eps on my DVR and I am so happy these are finally on DVD! Now I can delete the ones on my DVR and watch them uncut whenever i want! No more commercials! Glad to see there are some extras too!

When Amazon first listed the set they had a sale price of about $90.00.
It never went back. Their price now is only 15% off the MSRP. I'll have to wait for a Gold Box deal or a real good sale price.

Up to Season 2 now and I miss Dobie's blond buzzcut. He had shades of light brown hair in a select few scenes of Season 1 but it was bleached all the way.
Maynard is grating on the nerves for some reason. His character should've been recurring instead of full-time. Glad to see more Zelda as the season progresses. I do miss Thalia and Davey. Rock-A-Bye Dobie I forgot to mention was jittery in some scenes. Too bad Shout couldn't find a decent master. |

Do you have to buy the complete series set, to get the bonus disc, or will it come with one of the individual sets?

But I'm guessing you have to buy the complete series to get the bonus disc. |
