TV Rhys Ifans To Recur on "Elementary"

"Elementary" Adds Rhys Ifans as Holmes' [Spoiler]
by Kimberly Roots
6/26/13

When "Elementary" goes across the pond for its Season 2 premiere, we’ll meet at least one member of Holmes’ estranged family. Welsh actor Rhys Ifans has taken on the recurring role of Sherlock’s sibling Mycroft.

The CBS drama’s London-set episode, which will be filmed on location, finds Sherlock revisiting an old case in England. While there, he and Joan stay with his older brother — at 221B Baker Street — despite the siblings’ terrible falling-out years earlier.

During his stay, Sherlock and Mycroft will deal with the rift between them.

"Elementary" Sneak Peek: Joan Is Shocked to Meet Sherlock's Brother
Sep 3, 2013
by Natalie Abrams

When "Elementary" heads to London this fall, Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) won't be able to keep his life a secret any longer.

In a new preview for the upcoming sophomore season, Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) is shocked to meet Sherlock's brother Mycroft (Rhys Ifans), to whom Sherlock hasn't spoken in years.

Sherlock will be forced to confront his estranged brother when Mycroft allows him and Joan to stay in his new home at — wait for it, Holmesian fans — 221B Baker Street.

"Elementary" returns Thursday, Sept. 26 at 10/9c on CBS.

"Elementary" Scoop: Rhys Ifans Returns for Mycroft-Centric Finale
Feb 6, 2014
by Natalie Abrams

Mycroft is coming back to "Elementary" in a big way! The final episodes of the CBS drama's sophomore run will feature the return of Sherlock's (Jonny Lee Miller) brother Mycroft (Rhys Ifans) to New York.

"He'll be back for four more episodes as we wrap up the season," executive producer Rob Doherty tells TVGuide.com. "We are looking to build a Mycroft-centric story to finish out the season. We would include Rhys in four consecutive episodes and build something with him and Sherlock and Joan."

But that doesn't mean Mycroft and Joan (Lucy Liu) will start up another fling, something that irked Sherlock when he discovered the truth about his partner and brother.

"We touch on that a bit more," Doherty says. "For Sherlock, there's always a certain amount of discomfort when Mycroft is around because Mycroft is a window into Sherlock's past and Sherlock hates windows. The fact that Mycroft and Joan got chummy to the degree that they did is very disconcerting to him."

However, we will learn more about why Mycroft used his father's name in an attempt to get Sherlock to leave New York.

"The very last time we saw Mycroft, we hinted at an agenda that may be less than wholesome," Doherty says. "We owe an explanation and have to flesh that out and let the audience in on what might be going on between him and Sherlock."

But Doherty insists that, despite Mycroft's recent shadiness, Sherlock's father really is still in the picture.

"Sherlock's dad is a real and separate entity who will come along when the time is right," he says. "Mycroft is not a stand in for dad. What we implied is that Mycroft is trying to take advantage of the weakened relationship between Sherlock and his dad to try to get Sherlock out of New York."
