Michael J. Fox Remembers Family Ties Creator Gary David Goldberg Michael J. Fox, who had his breakout television role in the 1980s NBC sitcom Family Ties, is among those mourning the loss of the show's creator, Gary David Goldberg, who died Sunday. "With a full heart I say goodbye to my mentor, benefactor, partner, second father and beloved friend, Gary David Goldberg," Fox said in a statement. "He touched so many with his enormous talent and generous spirit. He changed my life profoundly. Love to [Goldberg's wife] Diana and all of Gary's family." After Family Ties went off the air in 1989, Fox went on to star in another of Goldberg's sitcoms, Spin City. Goldberg died Sunday after a battle with brain cancer. He was 68 and is survived by his wife and their two grown daughters. (see post #4 for updated information) |

That's a nice tribute from Michael J. Fox to Gary David Goldberg.

Michael J. Fox, 'Family Ties' Alums Speak at Gary David Goldberg Memorial 2:30 PM PDT 7/1/2013 by THR Staff Gary David Goldberg The invitation-only event for the recently deceased showrunner drew about 200 to the Paramount lot on Saturday for touching tributes and lots of laughs. Actor Michael J. Fox and Disney's Alan Horn were among the actors and execs who mourned Gary David Goldberg at a memorial service for the Family Ties creator this past Saturday. The two-hour, invitation-only event on the Paramount lot took place on the same stage where the fictional Keaton family lived, and featured numerous touching tributes and tears. The service began with a short film about Goldberg growing up in Brooklyn, followed by speeches and songs. Speakers included four writers from Family Ties, Goldberg's daughters and wife Diana and Fox. "Gary was loved by many, including me," said Fox, who rose to stardom as Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties before later reteaming with Goldberg on Spin City. Judith Hill closed the service with a rendition of "Amazing Grace" after Alan Bergman also sang two songs. There were also many laughs at the event, which had about 200 guests, including Family Ties alum Justine Bateman and Diane Lane, who starred in Goldberg's Must Love Dogs. "Gary's memorial captured him completely because it was an hour filled with big laughs and big tears ... but mostly big laughs," guest Cathleen Young, the executive director of Humanitas, told The Hollywood Reporter. "He had an incredible gift for friendship ... he made you feel so very special. And then you realized that's how he made everyone feel." Goldberg died June 22 from brain cancer at his home in Montecito, Calif. He was 68. |
